Long Thien Shih (b. 1946) Dalang, 1964

The dalang is the puppeteer in wayang kulit performance. He sits behind a screen made of white cotton stretched on a wooden frame. Above his head, hanging from beams attached to the top of the screen, is the lamp, which projects the shadows onto the screen. His job is to tell stories and usually uses Kelantan dialect as the main language. As can be seen in this piece he was accompanied by a group of musicians which makes the shows more exciting to watch. Together with his artist friend Nik Zainal Abidin, both have highlighted the enigmatic quality and tradition of wayang kulit. Long Thien Shih won a French government scholarship to study art in 1966 and was enrolled in the internationally renowned printmaking studio Atelier 17, founded by William Stanley Hayter, a prominent figure in British Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. He presented a retrospective exhibition titled Man Of The Times at National Art Gallery Malaysia in 2014. Long Thien Shih (b. 1946) Tongue And Egg, 1973

Tongue And Egg is suggestively erotic, coming from Long Thien Shih's prints of âdismembered' naked torsos and limbs, with a surrealist bent. The prints during this period are biting commentaries on sexual and environmental concerns. Long Thien Shih was already active in art at a young age since he won the 1st Prize in the Young Artists, Malaya competition in 1961, and was given his first solo at Samat Gallery in 1965, and then in Gallery 11 in 1966, and Melbourne's Crossley Gallery in 1967. He was given the French Government award to study at the Atelier 17 and Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, and furthered his studies at the Royal College of Art in London. It was a retrospective of sorts when he held the Man Of The Times exhibition at the National Art Gallery Malaysia in 2014.

Long Thien Shih (b. 1946) Grinding Chillies, 1962

This work by Long Thien Shih is interesting. 1) It was painted when he was only 16 and at that time, he was very much into art, having been with the Wednesday Art Group under the direct tutelage of its founder Peter Harris. 2) It was painted in the Nanyang Style, the only works Long was exposed to then. Note the sound composition and matured application of colours. 3) It is not easy to find an old work by Long in the market. 4) The traditional manual method of grinding chillies from the raw granite mortar and pestle (roll or pounding) is said by some to be tastier than those using modern electric conveniences. Even the process of pounding or rolling the chilli is said to be therapeutic. 5) The painting was one done on masonite board (not common in the early years) instead of canvas, but as Long intoned: "Masonite board was cheaper than imported canvas, if primed properly with zinc oxide and skin glue, as taught by Peter Harris." Long recalled that the painting was done from memories of the life he witnessed at Kampung Kuantan in Klang. "I used to cycle to Kampung Kuantan from my father's kopitiam in Jalan Batu Tiga during my schooldays." Painter-printmaker Long Thien Shih has impeccable credentials in art, and his long career path is well summed up in the exhibition, Long Thien Shih: Man Of The Times, at the National Art Gallery, in 2014. He showed early promise when he won 1st Prize in the Arts Council's Young Artists Award in 1961, and was given his first one-man show at the Samat Art Gallery in 1965 and Gallery 11 in 1966 before he received a study award in France, at the Atelier 17, Atelier de Lithography and the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1966 to 1969, and an MFA (Printmaking) at the Royal College of Art in London (1972). In 1992, he won the Prints Prize in the Salon Malaysia. He had solos in Melbourne (Crossley Gallery) and Singapore (National Library). His works are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan, and the National Art Gallery Malaysia.

This painting, entitled Kampung Hailam, 1963 is especially endearing as Long Thien Shih’s have relatives who live in Kampung Hailam in Port Klang and Pulau Ketam. The artist used to spend his school holidays there with them during his childhood. “When I began to learn drawing, l noticed many artists have been painting fishing villages using the oil and watercolour medium,” said Long. This inspired him to incorporate similar subjects as part of his works, and more so, because these subjects and scenes are endearing, as well as familiar to the artist. “During my formative years as an artist, from 1960 to 1964, l painted many fishing villages in all sorts of styles, and initially, l took cues from veteran artists like Cheong Soo Peng or Lim Cheng Hoe or Yong Mụn San, but later l develop my own style by using palette knives to render lines in watercolour, which was never done by any one before me. I know the essential features of the fishing village and boats, which l would then employ the palette knife with watercolour easily to render the subjects in my own way,” said Long about his style of painting.

In conjunction with the year of the tiger, Long Thien Shih pays tribute to legendary beauty Rose Chan, the first striptease dancer from Malaya to gain international fame. She was also renowned as the Goddess of tiger show, performing brave acts such as the “Python Act” where she wrestled with a python. She established Grace Home, a voluntary shelter home based in Klang for the homeless and destitute women. These large birds nest in natural cavities and require a habitat of mature and tall thick trunked trees. The destruction of Southeast Asian forests and illegal poaching has led to the decline of the hornbill species. The dalang is the puppeteer in wayang kulit performance. He sits behind a screen made of white cotton stretched on a wooden frame. Above his head, hanging from beams attached to the top of the screen, is the lamp, which projects the shadows onto the screen. His job is to tell stories and usually uses Kelantan dialect as the main language. As can be seen in this piece he was accompanied by a group of musicians which makes the shows more exciting to watch. Together with his artist friend Nik Zainal Abidin, both have highlighted the enigmatic quality and tradition of wayang kulit.
