Walter Richard Sickert Sold at Auction Prices

Früchtemaler, Painter, Etcher, Illustrator, Lithographer, Genre Painter, Porträtmaler, Still life painter, Flower painter, b. 1860 - d. 1942

Walter Richard Sickert was a painter, actor, etcher, teacher and lecturer who was known as the "dandy and the raffish scourge of genteel bohemianism of the Bloomsbury Group, the deliberate vulgarian and the enemy of every sort of academicism." It was written that "his life was a trail of dumped pictures and abandoned marriages". Sickert was active throughout Great Britain, primarily in London, and for many years struggled to make a living. Wendy Baron, former director of the British Government Art Collection, is the "doyenne" of researching and authenticating his work, which is difficult because he frequently signed works that were not his simply because he liked them. He often copied images that he saw in newspapers or 19th century engravings.

Some of his subject matter came from his favorite haunts, which where "raucous music halls with the dodgiest clients and floozies on call." He also loved the theatre, and drew actors and actresses as they performed, and another favored subject were bedroom scenes with men getting dressed and women lolling on unmade beds.

During a long creative career of painting and printmaking, he completed about 2,800 works. Wendy Baron has included them in a 2007 book of 544 pages, Sickert: Paintings & Drawings, published by Yale University Press.

Walter Richard Sickert RA RBA,  British 1860-1942 -  Off to the Pub, 1912;  chalk, heightened with white on paper, titled lower left 'Off to the Pub', 53.5 x 39 cm (unframed) Note: fresh to the market and not reproduced in any catalogues, this work is perhaps the original sketch for a drawing which was rework and cropped for reproduction in a journal (with Saville Gallery). Sickert further went on to create a painting of the same title, which is in the collection of the Leeds Art Gallery. Another version of this domestic scene is in the collection of the Tate. The gentleman depicted is Sickert's primary school friend, Hubby, who Sickert used as a model often over this time period.  With thanks to Dr. Wendy Baron for her assistance in the cataloguing of this work.

Although there is no record of him painting during this brief stay, he was known to have referred to it as the loveliest city in the world and it undoubtedly enthralled him as he was to return for more extended visits, inspiring him to paint some of his most important and critically acclaimed works. In May 1896 Sickert returned to Venice and took as his studio a flat at 940 Calle dei Frati, keeping it for all his subsequent visits. A few minutes' walk to the Accademia and Grand Canal, just north of the Zattere, Sickert visited and painted the famous buildings and sites of Venice, returning to the same spot on numerous occasions to repeat the process at different times of the day. Indeed, repetition was a key feature of Sickert's work in general but notably in his views of Venice and Dieppe. In Venice, he painted version after version of the façade and piazza at San Marco, the Santa Maria della Salute, the Rialto Bridge and the Scuola di San Marco. His dedication to revisiting the same locations echoes the architectural series of works produced by the Impressionists and, in particular bear comparison with Monet's series of paintings of Rouen Cathedral. However, unlike the Impressionists, he was not overly interested in recording the passing of time and light on his subject matter but rather to disentangle from nature the illumination that brings out most clearly the character of each scene. (W. Sickert, French Pictures, Knoedler's Gallery, Burlington Magazine, July 1923, pp.39-40).Consequently, Sickert's paintings were frequently executed in his studio from drawings and small oil sketches. He showed scant interest in the effect of changing atmospheric conditions. Instead, he used this repetition to explore variations in colour and tone, experimenting with the handling of paint and the different emotional responses that these variations provoked. The most important of these were a small number of pictures depicting Venice at nightfall. These are reminiscent of the works of his earlier teacher, James McNeill Whistler, who famously painted London and Venice at night, referring to them as Nocturnes or Symphonies. Whistler used musical terms in the title in order to appeal directly to the viewer's senses without the need for narrative or subject. This synthesis of individual artistic disciplines appealed to a deeper, more visceral emotion than mere aesthetics. Although Sickert does not use the same language as his master the intent is very similar. In the present work Sickert depicts the unmistakable site of the Rialto Bridge from the Grand Canal, however he is not exploring Canalettos's topographical splendour or indeed Monet's fleeting light dancing on the water and reflecting on the Palazzos; he is appealing directly to the viewer's senses. Through the carefully chosen colours and tones, he creates a deep emotional response that transcends the obvious beauty of the subject and in turn impels the viewer to look beyond the subject and reflect on his own personal reaction to the painting. It is not Sickert recording his experience before the subject, but rather it is the experience of standing before the painting itself and it is this that makes this work as contemporary today as it was when it was painted over 100 years ago in the loveliest city in the world.

Walter Richard Sickert United Kingdom, England, Germany, (1860 - 1942) Mornington Crescent, female reclining nude charcoal and chalk on paper Signed lower left. Provenance: Originally owned by Carl Lyman, Lyman Bros Gallery / Framers, Indianapolis, IN. Biography from the Archives of askART: Walter Richard Sickert was a painter, actor, etcher, teacher and lecturer who was known as the "dandy and the raffish scourge of genteel bohemianism of the Bloomsbury Group, the deliberate vulgarian and the enemy of every sort of academicism." It was written that "his life was a trail of dumped pictures and abandoned marriages". Source: William Feaver, "A Postmodern Dandy", ARTnews, May 2007. p. 112

Walter Richard Sickert United Kingdom, England, Germany, (1860 - 1942) Mornington Crescent, female reclining nude charcoal and chalk on paper Signed lower left. Source: William Feaver, "A Postmodern Dandy", ARTnews, May 2007. p. 112

Three years after the annexation of Schleswig by Prussia, my father came to settle in England where he became a naturalized Englishman during my minority. Arriving in May 1895, he spent prolonged periods in the city until September 1896, taking a studio on the Calle dei Frate, a residence he would return to on all his subsequent trips. Like generations of artists before him, Sickert was fascinated by the historic architecture and shimmering canals. In addition to the very famous and much-illustrated sites such as San Marco or the Rialto Bridge, Sickert also painted numerous views of lesser-known buildings and picturesque backwaters. As Wendy Baron highlights in her book Sickert Paintings & Drawings, the lack of precise dating in Sickert's Venetian works adds to the challenge of understanding the exact chronology of his paintings. Nonetheless, this exploration of recurring themes and places reveals Sickert's deep connection with Venice and his artistic journey in capturing the city's timeless charm.Repetition is a key feature of Sickert's work in general but notably in his views of Venice and Dieppe. In Venice, he painted version after version of the façade and piazza at San Marco, Santa Maria della Salute, the Rialto Bridge and the Scuola di San Marco. His dedication to revisiting the same locations echoes the architectural series of works produced by the Impressionists and, in particular bear comparison with Monet's series of paintings of Rouen cathedral. However, unlike the Impressionists, he was not overly interested in recording the passing of time and light on his subject matter. Sickert's paintings were frequently executed in his studio from drawings and photographs and he showed scant interest in the effect of changing atmospheric conditions. Instead, he used this repetition to explore variations in colour and tone, experimenting with the handling of paint and the different results that might yield. The Scuola Grande di San Marco, with its grand façade, is one of Venice's most significant architectural sites. It dates from the fifteenth century and was designed by Pietro Lombardo , Mauro Codussi , and Bartolomeo Bon . The situation alongside the Ponte del Cavallo on the Rio dei Mendicanti canal provided Sickert with an ideal composition and it became one of his favoured views during his first visit. Sickert produced six paintings of the subject, each showcasing a slightly different artistic technique ranging from intensely bright colouration with strong reflections to the present example, rendered in soft, feathery tones. There is no sharpness to the painterly brushwork and the colours are muted with the use of subtle layering.

Zangwill was a Zionist Jewish leader and novelist and friend of Sickert's first wife, Ellen Cobden. Baron asserts that Zangwill was in Venice in April 1896 and saw much of the Sickerts.

Literature: Wendy Baron, Sickert Paintings and Drawings, published by Yale University Press, New Haven and London for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, 2006, cat no. 205.5; Walter Sickert: Drawings Theory and Practice: Word and Image, Scolar Press, Aldershot, 1996. There are three extant paintings of this sitter, La Poveretta (or in Venetian dialect, La Poareta), reputed to be the mother of the young Venetian woman, La Giuseppina (Little Josephine), notoriously portrayed in the oil Putana a Casa (Whore at Home) in 1903-1904, the period in which Sickert made several visits to Venice. The artist painted several versions of both mother and daughter; Baron illustrates three paintings of the gaunt ‘Mamma mia poveretta’ (cat. nos. 205, 205.1 and 205.2), in which the sitter wears the same distinctive headscarf. Two further oils are listed, and four related drawings, including the present one (cat nos. 205.3,4, and 6). Sickert described La Giuseppina’s aged mother to his friend Mrs Hulton on 1 January 1904 as ‘a splendid model’, with a fazzoletto (headscarf or handkerchief), black, with peacocks’ feathers on her head.’ The drawing, exhibited in Drawings by Walter Sickert, at the Carfax Gallery, January, 1911, was sketched, along with all the other drawings in the exhibition, as no. 38 of the wall layout of drawings, reproduced in Anna Gruetzner Robins, Walter Sickert, Drawings Theory and Practice: Word and Image. Presumably the orange hue of the paper inspired the annotation 'char old gold.' On 1 February 1911, at the end of the exhibition at the Carfax Gallery, this drawing was bought by Iolo Aneurin Williams (1890-1962) for £5 and 5 Shillings. The family archive contains the original receipt from the Carfax Gallery, dated February 1, and listed as catalogue no. 38 from the Drawings by Walter Sickert exhibition.
