CONTACT US SKU#: 127248 US Shipping $42 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Richard Simkin was the son of a commercial traveller, also named Richard. He spent much of his time at Aldershot, Hampshire, after marrying his wife, Harriet, in 1880, and may also have been a volunteer in the Artists Rifles. He was employed by the War Office to design recruiting posters, and to illustrate the Army and Navy Gazette. In 1901 he created a series of 'Types of the Indian Army' for the Gazette.; he obtained much of the information from the Colonial and India Exhibition of 1886. During his lifetime, he, along with Orlando Norie produced thousands of watercolours depicting the uniforms and campaigns of the British Army. Simkin also contributed illustrations to numerous publications including the Boy's Own Magazine, The Graphic and others; many were published by Raphael Tuck and sons.He died at his home at 7 Cavendish Street, Herne Bay on 25 June 1926, survived by his wife and two daughters. Today, his pictures can be seen in numerous regimental museums and his illustrations appear in regimental histories, while watercolours frequently come up for auction.

    RICHARD SIMKIN (1840- 1926) A Collection of Four Officers in Full Dress - Officers of the 1912 Hussars - Officer of the Second Dragoons, Royal Scots Greys - Officer of the 15th Hussars - Officer of the 21st Lancers Gouache, 13 x 9cm each Mounted and framed Simkin was a military artist who lived and worked close to his subject matter, in Aldershot. A prolific watercolour painter of military uniforms and parades, with a very distinctive style, he can be considered with Orlando Norrie, as one of the two best late Victorian artist who specialised in recording their country's military strength. He also painted recruiting posters and illustration for the 'Army and Navy Gazette', and published a number of related books viz. Boys Book of British Battles 1889, Our Armies 1891, and Where Glory Calls 1893 etc.

    Richard Simkin (1840-1924) Britain Victorian Military Forces Pre Federation Uniforms, South Africa [2] Watercolour Each signed lower right Each 25 x 24 cm, 39.5 x 39.5 cm framed LITERATURE: Richard Simkin was a British artist and illustrator of military uniforms. The War Office employed him to design recruiting posters, and illustrate the Army and Navy Gazette. He painted many watercolours of British Army uniforms. His work on posters polished his ability to create eye-catching images. This led to him contributing illustrations to the Boy's Own Magazine, The Graphic and others Here are some of his lithographs for you to choose from. They are genuine antique prints, made in the 1820s. OTHER NOTES: Good condition, slight age discolouration of paper, possibly laid down, later framing
