Gustavo Simoni, gebürtig aus Rom, erhielt seine künstlerische Ausbildung an der renommierten Accademia di San Luca und gehörte zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Gesellschaft der Aquarellisten. Seit Ende der 1870er Jahre widmete er sich zunehmend nordafrikanischen Motiven. Seine Reisen nach Algerien und Marokko, inspiriert von den Eindrücken der maurischen Architektur Andalusiens, prägten sein Werk über viele Jahre. Simoni lebte längere Zeit in der historischen Stadt Tlemcen, die er als Ausgangspunkt für seine Studien in den Wüsten und Städten des Maghreb nutzte. Seinen Durchbruch feierte er 1889 mit der Verleihung einer Goldmedaille beim Pariser Salon. Zu seinen Auftraggebern zählte unter anderem König Umberto I. Eng verbunden mit der französischen Kunstszene, die den Orientalismus als bedeutende Kunstrichtung etablierte, eröffnete Simoni in den 1890er Jahren ein Atelier in Paris und gründete in Rom eine Schule für orientalische Malerei. Wie viele seiner Zeitgenossen im französischen und italienischen Orientalismus widmete sich Simoni der Darstellung der islamischen Welt. Diese Strömung, die im Frankreich des 19. Jahrhunderts an der Schnittstelle von Romantik und Neoklassizismus entstand, erreichte in der zweiten Hälfte des Jahrhunderts ihre Blütezeit. Orientalistische Künstler verbanden häufig dokumentarische Genauigkeit mit malerischer Poesie. Simoni fand seine Inspiration in genauen Beobachtungen und einer aufrichtigen Empathie für das Leben nomadischer Stämme, ihre Traditionen und den Alltag. Das hier gezeigte Werk zeigt eine abendliche Rast eines Karawanenzugs vor dem sanften Licht des Sonnenuntergangs. Die in warmes Abendlicht getauchten Figuren vermitteln die Erschöpfung einer langen Reise. In der rosa Dämmerung ist die Silhouette einer Stadt zu erkennen - vermutlich das Ziel der Karawane. Während Simoni typische Elemente des Genres bewahrt - eine ausdrucksstarke Farbgebung sowie detailreiche Darstellungen orientalischer Alltagsgegenstände und Textilien - verzichtet er auf übertriebene Romantisierung. Die Protagonisten - barfüßige Männer in abgetragener Kleidung, von denen einige den Betrachter direkt ansehen - sind mit großer Sorgfalt und Respekt festgehalten, als ob sie durch die Linse einer Kamera eingefangen wären. As can be seen in this composition, Simoni's painting is characterized by the realistic cut, as well as by the realization of oriental themes very much in accordance with the taste of the bourgeoisie of his time. His style, precious and meticulous, of clear and brilliant tonalities, seeks to obtain luminous effects of great aesthetic charge. Likewise, he ennobles the portrayed, something especially outstanding in the representation of this bronze-skinned African character captured in profile, who adopts a withdrawn and reflective attitude. Gustavo Simoni was an Italian painter, watercolorist and art teacher known for his orientalist scenes. From 1877 he made numerous trips, visiting France, Spain and, especially, North Africa, where he made several extended stays in Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. In 1889, he won a gold medal at the Salon for his monumental representation of the fire of Persepolis. Among his clients, King Umberto I was among his regular clients. Measurements: 97 x 65 cm, 120 x 90.5 cm (frame). Gustavo Simoni was an Italian painter, watercolourist and art teacher. He is above all known for his orientalist scenes. He had a younger brother, Scipione, who, with his support, also became a painter. From 1877 onwards he travelled extensively, visiting France, Spain and especially North Africa, where he made several extended stays in Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. For many years he lived in an isolated house near Tlemcen, where he was visited by his friends and associates in Rome and developed a relationship with the local authorities. In 1889, he won a gold medal at the Salon for his monumental representation of the burning of Persepolis. King Umberto I was among his regular clients. He was also a member of the Accademia di San Luca. In the 1890s he opened a studio in Paris and founded a school of Orientalist painting in Rome. When he returned there, he lived in a farmhouse that had been renovated by his son-in-law, the architect Francesco La Grassa. Italian painter and teacher born in Rome, Gustavo Simoni traveled a lot from his beginnings and went to France, Spain, Africa and more particularly to Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. Orientalist painter attentive to detail, he knows how to capture the thrills of an environment and fix the memory of a moment. He painted genre scenes in Palestrina and Sorrento with a profusion of figures represented with great vivacity and delicate colors. Also attracted by historical themes, he creates reconstructions of imaginative and improbable scenes, taking place in ancient Rome or the Renaissance. He joined the group of founders of the Association of Roman Watercolourists and exhibited his watercolours. Works in the museums of Rome, Vincenza, Glasgow, Leipzig, Melbourne and New York.
