JOHN SKEAPING (England, 1901 -1980) for WEDGWOOD. "Two Monkeys." Signed in the back area and on the base. Measurements: 17 x 19 x 9 cm. John Rattenbury Skeaping, was an English equine sculptor and painter. Known for his designs of animal figures for Wedgwood, upon his return to England in 1926 he was introduced to Frank Wedgwood, managing director of Wedgwood. After visiting the Etruria factory, Skeaping was commissioned to model a series of animal studies for which he was paid £100. The series consisted of 14 figures, ten of which went into production in late 1927. The figures included a tiger and deer, fallow deer, polar bear, monkeys, and a sitting and standing duiker (a type of deer). A buffalo figure also produced as part of the series was based on an East African buffalo calf born at the London Zoo in 1927. A Wedgwood advertising brochure from the 1930s described that "the excellence of these animal figures shows how amply Mr. Skeaping's studies of animal life have been rewarded." The animal figures were produced in black basalt and also in earthenware bodies applied with a variety of matte and colored glazes, including matte white Moonstone and a matte straw.
