POETRY 1977 Oil on canvas, 53x99,5 cm, signed and dated lower center "Z. Sklenar 77". In an original artist`s frame. „In 1977, Alexandr Skalicky photographed a portrait of the painter and graphic artist Zdenek Sklenar. The painting Poetry, which Sklenar painted for Skalicky at his request, also appears in the view of the camera. It is actually paradoxical that the photograph, which was supposed to remind its author of the unique moments he spent with the artist in his studio, serves today, when the Skalicky collection enters the art market, as proof of the authenticity of the painting.“ /Patek 2022/ As in other cases, the correspondence between the artist and the client is very valuable. It often documents the complex path of the creative process and significantly reveals the artist`s point of view. It is one of the fundamental values of the entire collection. „Your painting - somehow it seems very little colorful to me now. At school I had a big bright studio where I saw every line and so I got into a drawing position. But now I see everything much more in color - thanks to the new studio. That`s why I`m going to do it again and remake it. This is my way of painting, that suddenly it takes me and I remake the painting several times, when I recognize that it is good. And this is the case. That`s why be patient and everything has to turn out well in the end.“ From a letter from August 8,1977, Archive of The Moravian Gallery, fund Skalicky Alexandr, board no. 5. APOLLINAIRE 1980 Kombinovaná technika - kresba tužkou a fixem na papíře, 387x249 mm (výřez rámu), sign. a dat. tužkou vpravo dole „Sklenář 80“. Rámováno, zaskleno. Zdeněk Sklenář - legendární český ilustrátor, grafik, malíř. Studoval Státní uměleckoprůmyslovou školu u prof. Hofbauera a VŠUP u prof. Z. Kratochvíla, byl členem SVU Mánes a Hollaru. Na VŠUP také později pracoval, po válce jako asistent F. Muziky, v letech 1969-1977 vedl ateliér ilustrace a užité grafiky, zároveň byl vedoucí katedry malby, grafiky, kresleného a loutkového filmu. Svůj první ateliér si pronajal v Ostrovní ulici, barvy mu dodával přítel Karel Černý. 1. výstavní příležitost mu poskytl E. F. Burian (výstava Mládí v D40), 1946 měl 1. samostatnou výstavu v Topičově salonu. Na jeho dílo měla významný vliv cesta do Číny v r. 1955, kde jej zaujaly principy východoasijské kaligrafie, byl také několikrát v Paříži, ve Švýcarsku, Holandsku, Itálii, Anglii, Německu, Maďarsku, Belgii či Indii. R. 1959 obdržel zlatou a stříbrnou medaili za grafické úpravy knih na knižním veletrhu v Lipsku. R. 1960 se stal členem tvůrčí skupiny Bilance při Umělecké besedě. 1968 získal Čestné uznání Ministerstva kultury ČSSR za spolupráci na Expo 67 v Montrealu, 1971 pak zlatou medaili na Biennale Internazionale d’Arte ve Florencii. Czech painter, graphic artist, illustrator and book designer, he studied under A. Hofbauer and Z. Kratochvil at the Academy of Decorative Arts in Prague. His imaginative works were stamped with the influence of Surrealism; his paintings show his lifelong interest in the interaction of the amorphous coloured surface and refined sign structure.
