Slama NY 61 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 400 - 600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 400 Victor Theodor Slama (1890–1973) was an Austrian graphic artist, exhibition designer, and stage designer, born and died in Vienna, whose political posters shaped the visual identity of Red Vienna in the 1920s and 1930s. After attending private art schools and completing an apprenticeship at a printing house, he specialized in political graphic design, primarily for the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria (SDAPÖ). His breakthrough came in 1923 with the iconic "Red Man" poster; in 1928, under the pseudonym A. Malsov, he created 18 posters for the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) for the Reichstag elections. Slama designed heroic, expressive compositions in the styles of Expressionism, Art Nouveau, and New Objectivity, influenced by colleagues such as Joseph Binder, Julius Klinger, Fritz Schönpflug, Marianne Jobst-Rieder, and Käthe Kollwitz. He designed product posters, film posters, building facades, portraits, and still lifes. Under Nazi rule, he was initially banned from practicing his profession (1938), but in 1941 he was admitted to the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts and continued working, including for cinemas. After 1945, he curated exhibitions such as "Never Forget!" (1945) and "Vienna 1848" (1948), mass festivals for the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB), the Austrian Workers' Sports Association (ASKÖ), and the Austrian Chamber of Labor (AK), as well as election posters (e.g., 1953). He remained active as an adult educator and festival director until the 1960s. Parallels to Bernd Steiner, Alfons Walde, and Herbert Gurschner underscore his role in Viennese applied arts. He was born on October 26, 1890 in Vienna and died there on December 1, 1973. Slama specialized in political commercial graphics, working mainly for the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria (SDAPÖ) and other left-wing parties. For the 1928 Reichstag election he made posters for the German Communist Party (KPD) under the pseudonym A. Malsov. During the Nazi regime he was initially banned from working, but was later reinstated, especially for film posters. After the Second World War, he designed socio-politically relevant exhibitions in Vienna and remained active as a commercial artist until the late 1960s. With his clear images and expressiveness, Slama had a lasting impact on the visual appearance of Red Vienna. Slama had a long and prolific career as a press illustrator and poster designer in Austria, winning the City of Vienna Prize in 1951. As the main graphic designer for the Social Democratic party he designed a lot of political posters, but he also designed posters for the press, commercial products and movies. After World War II, Vienna, like Berlin, was occupied by the Allies and divided into four quarters. It wasn't until 1950 that the city was free from the occupying forces. This protest poster rails against the occupation asking "How long do we still need them?" Four gigantic eyes (the Allied occupiers), against a dark background watch every movement of the populace. In the center of the image is an identity card printed in the four languages of the occupying forces. An unsettling, though crystal clear message.
