NOTE With its vibrant palette and detailed background, this painting tenderly portrays the sitter in her betrothal or marriage portrait. In 1773, it was recorded with a pendant, Portrait of a man with a statue of Mercury (see Provenance). The young woman holds a rosebud and behind her in the elegant garden is a statue of Flora with a wreath of flowers, symbolising Spring and hopefulness. The unusually complete provenance of the painting reveals that it was in the collection of Johann van der Marck, Burgomaster of Leiden, until its sale in 1773, suggesting that the young woman may have been a member of van der Marck's family. This painting was probably made in the 1670s, when Slingeland executed most of his delicate, genre-like portraits.

NOTE This interior scene by Pieter van Slingeland was conceived along with a companion piece1, representing An Old Couple in a Garret (see fig. 1), which was last recorded when sold Brussels, Palais des Beaux-Arts, 9 March 1953, lot 127. Both paintings were together in the collection of Madame de Haan-Bierens, Amsterdam in 1842, and also in the deceased sale of her father David Bierens in Amsterdam in 1881, in which they were offered as consecutive lots (the pendant as lot 19). Both pictures share a similar compositional formula, with light emanating from an opening on the left of the scene to reveal figures preparing food with a young child. The elderly woman seated on a wicker chair in the present scene appears to be based on the same model depicted in the pendant. Like Quringh van Brekelenkam (see lot 10), Slingeland is believed to have trained with Gerrit Dou in Leiden, before joining the Guild of St. Luke in 1661, becoming Dean in 1691. He specialised in genre painting, inspired by the work of his fellow citizens Brekelenkam and Frans van Mieris, although his precise brushwork and treatment of light (particularly visible in the still life elements in the lower right corner of this work) principally derive from the work of Gerrit Dou.
