ARTIST: JAN SLUYTERS (1881-1957) SIZE: 20 5/8 x 29 in./52.3 x 73.5 cm DESCRIPTION: Artists’ balls were all the rage at the beginning of the 20th century, and we’d like to know what caused them to die off—perhaps it’s time for a resurgence. Sluyters offers us a psychedelic invitation to partake in what was surely a wild night in The Hague. Sluyters was a multitalented painter, lithographer, and graphic artist. In 1909, together with Mondrian and Toorop, he founded a group called The Modern Art Ring, with Cubistic and Futuristic tendencies; by 1920 he was working in portraits and landscapes with a more realistic style. Throughout, he earned a living as a book and magazine illustrator as well as a poster designer. (Art Deco; Dance)

Jan Sluijters (1881-1957), The Rokin in Amsterdam by snow, oil on canvas, 96x127 cm, Jan Sluijters’ stay in Paris 1906 was a turning point in his career. There he came into contact with modern French art, the methods of the Neo-Impressionists and Fauvists, which fascinated him greatly. He deeply shocked the established order by his new modern approach, and the reviews were damning; however, Sluijters continued to work imperturbably in the way he thought best. By 1910, his work was more appreciated, given the growing number of exhibitions in museums and at art dealers. The 1920s saw various artistic highlights for Jan Sluijters (’s-Hertogenbosch 1881 - Amsterdam 1957). During this period, he distanced himself from the avant-garde, and from the earlier fierceness that characterized his earlier work. After World War I, more modernists returned to a more moderate and classical realism. Yet Sluijters’ disposition will always be that of the lyrical luminist. Colour is his means of expression and despite the partial return to tradition, he remains a fantastic colourist. Sluijters did not enjoy travelling, preferring to stay in his home environment. For this assiduous hardworker, painting is a daily labour from nine to half past three, an almost physical activity also and a struggle with matter - the paint. During this period, he looks for his subjects close to home. He said once that ‘all the subjects he painted could be found within twenty-five metres around him’. The themes were predominately of female nudes, portraits (usually commissioned) and (flower) still lifes. In addition, he also painted cityscapes of Amsterdam’s Damrak and Rokin. With a distinctive brushstroke and a few paint splotches, Sluijters certainly shows his temperament in his wildly painted ‘The Rokin in Amsterdam by snow’ (1922). About his use of colour, a critic noted in pen a note in the margin line of one of the catalogs: ‘ Breitner-like in colour, with some lights’. Most of his extensive oeuvre was created in his studio: till 1930 he lived in the Lomanstraat, after that year his studio was an upper floor of his house at the Olympiaplein in Amsterdam. In contrast, ‘The Rokin in Amsterdam by snow’ was painted from the window of his beloved Arti et Amicitiae club, where he could be found almost every day in the afternoon, for instance to play a game of billiards. According to an accompanying text of one of the many exhibitions where this painting was shown (Assen, 1957), it was painted in a single day. Whether this is indeed the case is not certain. Generally, he explored all the possibilities of paint, but at the same time was also a toiling artist, not easily satisfied with a result and endlessly polishing and retrying . The cityscape was a favourite theme of his in this period and, unlike before, he worked on large canvases. He wanted among other things to show the sensation of the metropolis, the lights and thereby express the noise of the traffic. ‘The Rokin in Amsterdam by snow’ gives an impression of the bustling streets: city people walking to the tram, a passing cyclist and a bus, colourful with light accents of melting snow. A representation of the Rokin in the days when the canal had not yet been filled in. Provenance: -Collection Mr. Bernhard Vroom and Mrs. Vroom-Dreesmann, possibly acquired from the artist or from Kunsthandel Frans Buffa & Zonen, Amsterdam, thence by descent to the present owners. Bernardus Hendricus (Bernard) Vroom (Amsterdam, 18 May 1884 - Amsterdam, 8 December 1961) was one of the two managing directors of Vroom & Dreesmann and one of the directors of Vroom & Dreesmann Amsterdam NV from 1919 for many years. In 1948 he became chairman and later honorary chairman of the main board of directors of V&D Netherlands. He was the eldest son of Willem Vroom (1850-1925), one of the two founders of the department store chain. Vroom married Geertruida (Truus) Dreesmann (1893-1992) in 1912. Their youngest son Rudi (1917-1989) succeeded him as a supervisory director of all the NV's of Vroom & Dreesmann and later, as his father did, became chairman of the main board of V&D Netherlands. The family had known the artist for years: Sluijters painted at least one or two of their daughters and he portrayed Truus Vroom around 1932.

Provenance: -Collection Mr. Piet Boendermaker, Bergen. -Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1926-1937 (on loan from Piet Boendermaker). -Groninger Museum, Groningen (on loan). -With Kunsthandel Gazendam, Groningen. The picturesque village of Staphorst has intrigued many artists in the nineteenth century, including Lammert van der Tonge, Jo Koster, Dirk Filarski, Stien Eelsingh and Jan Sluijters. While most of these artists were passers-by, Jan Sluijters and his wife sojourned in a small cottage in Staphorst from 1915 until 1916. During his stay, Sluijters experimented with a new style of painting, he significantly darkened his palette and his brushstrokes grew broader and heavier. In this present lot, the Dutch artist depicts a winding street of the green village of Staphorst, an upcoming farm wagon and two barely noticeable figures walking in the background. His palette is complex, dominated by green and darker tones with strokes of red coming from the bright lights of the farm wagon and blue of the houses’ fences. This painting is a great example of Jan Sluijters’s Staphorst period, considered to be among his most expressionistic works. signed and dated 'Jan Sluijters 1916' (upper right)
