  • Henry Holmes Smith (1909 – 1986) “Royal Pair” Dye Transfer Print
    Jan. 04, 2020

Henry Holmes Smith (1909 – 1986) “Royal Pair” Dye Transfer Print

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Henry Holmes Smith (1909 – 1986) “Royal Pair” Dye transfer print. 9 x 6 ¼ - inches on a 14 x 11 archival mat, framed, printed 1979. Smith’s distinguished teaching career started in 1937 at the New Bauhaus at the Institute of Design in Chicago. After WWII he taught at Indiana University. He began working with color in 1936, when the dye transfer process was first being developed. Between 1951 and 1982 he made many versions of the “Royal Pair.” The negatives were made by refracting light through water and corn syrup on glass plates. From the negatives he made matrices for each color, that he transferred to the final prints, deliberately out of registration, resulting in the soft focus and color blending.
