Painter, b. 1854 - d. 1907

(b Waterford, Connecticut 1854; d Asbury Park, New Jersey 1907) American painter. Henry Pember Smith is known for his highly realistic ocean and landscape views. Little is known about Smith’s early years, and it has been assumed that he was a self-taught painter. He began to exhibit in 1877 at the National Academy of Design, and continued to show his work there until 1896. He studied the Old Masters throughout Europe which is evident in his reliance on realism. He also exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Club; the Boston Art Club; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art; and the Art Institute in Chicago.
