JOHN RAPHAEL SMITH (1751-1812) after SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS Lt. Col. Tarleton Mezzotint by John Raphael Smith, published 4 Oct. 1782, London; 25 x 15 3/8 in. (trimmed within platemark, includes full image and legend below), float-mounted in French mat within antique frame. Flamboyant, aggressive and often reckless, Banastre Tarleton took leave from his elite regiment, the 1st Dragoon Guards, in order to serve in the American conflict. As a young cornet attached to the 16th Light Dragoons, he came to notice for his role in the capture of Major General Charles Lee in December 1776 and soon established a reputation for his skill in raiding and skirmishing during the 1777 campaign. With the establishment of the British Legion in 1778, Tarleton entered Provincial service as second-in command of Lord Cathcart's British Legion with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, later assuming overall command. During the Southern Campaigns of 1780-1781, Tarleton and his Legion gained notoriety for ruthlessness and earning from his opponents a new epithet, "Bloody Ban". Arriving in London shortly after his capture and parole following the Yorktown surrender, the handsome young cavalryman was an immediate celebrity and was painted in his green Legion uniform by the leading society artist, Sir Joshua Reynolds. Tarleton had earlier lost two of his fingers in combat during the battle of Cowpens, which may account for his pose in this portrait. Shortly after its completion, John Raphael Smith, a highly skilled mezzotint engraver and artist, produced this famous print in partnership with Reynolds; both works were an immediate success and are considered the epitome of both artists' skill in their respective medium.

Captain William Hotham, circa 1806, Inscribed on verso in 'Painted in April 1806 at Bath by J. R. Smith of 33 Monmouth Street, London' Pastel 18¼ x 14¼in. (46.5 x 36.5cm.) Provenance: Dominic Winter, British & Continental Picture Sale, 3 Dec 2008, lot 145 Admiral Sir William Hotham, GCB (1772-1848) came from a distinguished military and naval family. He served actively throughout the Napoleonic Wars including the Battle of Camperdown in 1797, for which he was awarded the naval gold medal depicted in this portrait. His ship, the Adamant (50), was also one of the very few not to mutiny at the Nore a few weeks before this battle. Whilst blockading Toulon his health suffered to the extent he resigned his command in September 1803 and he came ashore in June 1804 to marry, not returning to sea until 1808. Taking the 'cure' in Bath would have been a normal part of Georgian recuperation and many portrait artists set up studios to meet demand, the date of 1806 falls neatly into this middle of this period on half pay. He returned to semi-active service and commanded the Sea Fencibles off Hull and then the Royal Yacht Royal Sovereign which he relinquished in 1814. Thereafter he became a Gentleman at Court and a knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in 1840; He died at New Windsor in 1848 by when he had risen to the rank of a full Admiral.

JOHN RAPHAEL SMITH (ENGLISH, 1751-1812) Portrait of Walter Fawkes sitting in his study at Farnley Hall, Yorkshire Oil on canvas John Raphael Smith (1751-1812) was a portrait and genre painter, working with oil paint and pastel. He also enjoyed considerable fame as a mezzotint engraver and was appointed Engraver to The Prince of Wales, later King George IV(1762-1830). He exhibited works at The Royal Academy from 1779 to 1790. Examples of his works can be seen at The National Portrait Gallery, London. The Ferens Gallery, Hull and The Usher Art Gallery, Lincoln. A version of this portrait, in pastel, is recorded as being in a private collection (see The Art of J.M.W.Turner by David Blayney Brown, pg. 125). Walter Fawkes (1769-1825) was a Yorkshire landowner, with an estate, Farnley Hall, near Otley. He was MP for The County of York from 1806 to 1807. He was a writer and patron of the arts. He is best remembered for his friendship with J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851). He was his most important patron and probably his closest friend. Turner visited Farnley Hall on many occasions, sometimes staying for months at a time. At one time the collection of Turner’s work, in oil and watercolour, numbered over two hundred pictures. Over the years many of these have pictures have been sold from the collection. These can be seen today in many of the important art galleries of England and America. After the death of Walter Fawkes in 1825, Turner never returned to Farnley Hall.26 x 19 inches (66 x 48 cm.)
