Eugene Smith was commissioned to spend a few weeks in Pittsburgh and produce photographs for noted journalist and author Stefan Lorant's book commemorating the city's bicentennial. He ended up spending the whole year there compiling with about sixteen thousand photographs an epic study of the city.
