Reg Smythe (British, 1917-1998) 'There's Many a Man ----', pen and ink and coloured pencil cartoon on a manilla envelope, signed to lower margin of image, inscribed to top margin in pencil, 5 3/4 x 4 5/8in. (14.5 x 11.75cm.). * Reginald 'Reg' Smythe was the creator and artist of the famous 'Andy Capp' cartoons, published in the Daily Mirror from 1957 to 1999, the final year using a stockpile of unpublished comic strips. He served as a machine gunner in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in the North African Campaign during WW2, working his way up to Sergeant. He had already emerged as a talented artist by this time, drawing posters for amateur dramatics productions and selling cartoons to Cairo magazines. He was in the same regiment as Captain Herbert Borne, to whom he gave this cartoon during their time in North Africa. Set in Capp's residence, No. 37 Durham Street, the character is shown mid-argument with his wife as he leaves the house. The strip is drawn on thick artist's board and shows original alterations and additions to the layout. The piece is dated in blue pen on the top left, "Tues/Wed 15-12-76". A ticked initial marks the bottom right corner, while a small fingerprint smudge, probably the artist's, is found on the bottom left portion of the card. In excellent condition, this truly unique original drawing measures 5½" x 15".
