(Mary Louise) Snowden is a sculptor noted for exploring the monumental forces and energies of geological phenomena that extend to summaries of human figuration. Snowden's sculpture is intended to convey a sense of power and movement through a juxtaposition of abstract and representational elements. Mary Louise Snowden (American, b. 1952), "Cambrian Sea Fan", bronze, signature and "PP 9/10" inscribed and "Snowden / Rodin / Eberhard / Marque de Fondeur" foundry stamp on naturalistic base, h. 35 in., w. 25 in., d. 25 in., granite base, overall h. 38 in. Note: M.L. Snowden was born into the sculpture world. Her father, G. H. Snowden taught the subject at Yale, and he himself was taught by Auguste Rodins protégé, Robert Ebéhard. It is through that incidental lineage that M.L. Snowden inherited the literal and metaphorical tools of Rodin. Her body of work showcases her distinctive talent for crafting complicated arrangements that incorporate naturalistic elements with the human form, thus creating dense narrative compositions. In the lot offered here, the title Cambrian Sea Fan is a reference to the early and relatively short period of time when a huge influx of life suddenly appeared in the earths seas and was marked forever in the fossil record. The work is the embodiment of all that is living with a nymph-like figure bursting forth through the configuration. Snowden celebrates bronze as a water medium.
