Sonsini / May 2001 24" H x 18" W Provenance: Marc Selwyn Fine Art, Los Angeles, CA Notes: John Sonsini offers a historic spotlight on Latinx farmworkers through his notable portraits. Having had more than 30 recent solo and group exhibitions, the art world has taken note. Many renowned museums have acquired Sonsini's works, including the Whitney Museum, The Broad Foundation, The UCLA Hammer Museum, MOCA Los Angeles, and many others. He was formally trained and received his Bachelor of Arts in 1975. After taking an almost decade-long hiatus from painting, he found his artistic voice. Sonsini offers a distinct portrayal of the country's migrant workers, the backbone of the nation's agricultural economy. He uses vivid colors, confident brushstrokes and focuses on his subjects, bringing his sitters' personalities to life through his canvases. Sonsini's informal approach to his subject matter makes his work approachable. The artist has been compared to a modern-day Diego Rivera, however Sonsini denies the political undertone of his work. Sonsini says, "I definitely am not trying to make statements."

Oil on canvas, 20 x 16 in. (50.8 x 40.6 cm), framed. Condition: Good. Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection. N.B. Exhibition catalogs for John Sonsini, January 10 to February 10, 2007, Cheim & Reid, New York, published in an edition of 1000, and John Sonsini: New Paintings, March 8 to April 16, 2005, Anthony Grant, Inc., New York, accompany the lot. Sonsini is best known for his work depicting Latino day laborers in his neighborhood, the Pico-Union district in Los Angeles. In the present work, the portrait's frontal and tightly cropped frame evokes a reference to an ID portrait, raising the politically charged issue of immigration and legal documentation. Through his tactile and visceral brushwork, however, Sonsini diffuses the overt politics of this series, focusing on the humanity of his sitters. According to Sonsini, 'The information on cards in wallets is of little help to me. For me painting the portrait is about recreating the sensation of presence, the experience of having the sitter in my studio.' (1) 1. Kim Beil, "John Sonsini," Profile, Art Ltd., August 2007.
