          TRANSPARENT ENAMEL-ON-GOLD VASE Meiji Period By Namikawa Sosuke (1847-1910). In teardrop form with delightful feathered design beneath a transparent red enamel. Seal mark signature on base. Height 7.5" (19 cm). Namikawa Sosuke was brought to the world's attention by Siegfried Bing at the Gallery Art Nouveau in Paris and again at the Chicago World's Fair in 1890. His pieces worked on gold are exceedingly rare. A similar example in blue can be found in the Fuji Museum in Tokyo.

          Pair of Japanese Cloisonne Vases, Namikawa Sosuke of baluster form with waisted neck and flaring mouth and base, the slender tapering sides expertly decorated with flowering branches in the musen technique in muted enamels on a peach ground, Sakigake seal of Namikawa Sosuke (1847-1910) to base. Meiji Period. Retaining original wooden packing box, and each vase has been fitted with a plastic liner to hold water. 16 in. Deaccessioned from the Duke University Library Gifted to General and Mrs. Eichelberger in 1948 by the Emperor and Empress of Japan Very good condition.
