JESÚS RAFAEL SOTO (Ciudad Bolivar/Venezuela 1923–2005 Paris) Trois cercles noirs. 1996. Painted panel, wire, metal and silkscreen colour. Signed, dated and titled on the reverse: "TROIS CERCLES NOIRS" Soto 1996, also inscribed: HAUT. 85.5 × 102 × 16.5 cm. The certificate by the Soto Committee was not yet available at the time of going to press. Provenance: By descent to the present owner. "My investigations have nothing to do with the objects themselves. My painting tries to represent movement, vibration, light, space, time, things that exist but which do not have a determined form, and the only way I have found to do this is to attempt to represent the relationships between them." Jesús Rafael Soto The extraordinary art installation "Trois cercles noirs" from 1996 presents a captivating visual challenge. With its accomplished combination of different materials and colours, it offers the viewer an interactive experience within a unique world of optical illusions. Three complete black shapes as well as several suggested, half-finished circles, strokes and metal rods create the appearance of movement in this large-scale work. Since they are merely attached to the upper edge with wires and hang loosely, they give the appearance of floating. The weight of the metallic forms causes the wires to form parallel lines, reinforcing the impression of translocation and dynamism. With the fine white vertical lines on the black background, Jesús Rafael Soto also skilfully suggests visual depth. In the centre of the upper half of the somewhat smaller work "Carré et tes noirs" (lot 3430) from 1991, there is an eye-catching wooden square that clearly stands out from the white background and immediately attracts the viewer's attention. It radiates calm and order and may be interpreted as the central element of the artwork. The lower, narrower section, which probably serves as a counterpart, is black and decorated with fine white lines. T-shaped metal rods are attached to this black segment. Depending on your angle of vision or distance from the artwork, the lines and rods seem to oscillate, move or even vibrate optically. The art objects offered here are two outstanding examples of Soto's consummate ability to influence the viewer's visual and spatial perception. Experimenting with different elements, the artist encourages the viewer to examine the interactions between shapes, colours and materials and to explore the limits of visual perception. --------------- JESÚS RAFAEL SOTO (Ciudad Bolivar/Venezuela 1923–2005 Paris) Trois cercles noirs. 1996. "My investigations have nothing to do with the objects themselves. My painting tries to represent movement, vibration, light, space, time, things that exist but which do not have a determined form, and the only way I have found to do this is to attempt to represent the relationships between them." ---------------
