Biography from RoGallery: Energy is one of the most striking elements of work by Jesus Soto, and his experiments with optical effects are representative of some of the most successful of the Op Art-Kinetic Art movements. Soto's work, however, surpasses the mere exploitation of optical effects, and he intends in his paintings a concentration of energy, which attains a point where the paintings become a mirage, kinesthetically like a mental tension. Soto's use of the moire effect plays a prominent role in his early works of transition from the tradition of hard-edge abstraction founded by Modrian to the more fluid expression he presently uses. The influence of Modrian's balancing of lines and composition can be found in Soto's work, with Soto's added touch of a personal search for an art which would be its own master, wholly independent of the natural world, an attitude reflective of Modrian's. Soto's work with identical and multipliable elements was aimed at reducing the sign to total anonymity, in the effort to get away from subjective art. When the transition to kinetic art came Soto's way in 1955 he began to make plexiglass superimpositions. Spirals traced upon perspex were superimposed in depth. The optical effect that resulted was in the relationship between the surfaces. Soto's painting began to emerge and assume a sculptural dimension when he suspended wire and rods of metal in front of the background. This striping of the background seems to create the effect of attacking and partly absorbing the forms which are placed in front of it. Soto's work established a concrete relationship with the viewers perception as disconcerting and fascinating as a mirage. In 1973, the Jesús Soto Museum of Modern Art opened in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela with a collection of his work - a large number of the exhibits are wired to the electricity supply so that they can move. The Venezuelan architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva designed the building for the museum and the Italian op artist Getulio Alviani was called to direct it. Some of Soto's work adorns the ceiling of the main hall of Caracas' arts centre, the Teatro Teresa Carreño. Jesús Rafael Soto died in 2005 in Paris, and he is buried in the Cimetière du Montparnasse.

Mounted in places on backing board and framed under glass. - With a few isolated marks and scuffs, a few faint scratches, edges partly slightly bumped, very occasional subtle, barely visible adhesive residues. Overall in very good condition. An excellent, richly coloured print of the layered composition with a dynamic, three-dimensional visual effect. - The optical complexity and movement typical of Soto's work is created by the combination of transparent Plexiglas and colored surfaces that change with the viewer's perspective. "Lettre du Venezuela" is an example of Soto's aim to actively involve the viewer in his work and to thematize perception as a dynamic process. In his "Vibrations" series of the 1960s, Soto already used simple materials such as wire, wood and Plexiglas to achieve a dematerialization of art and a dissolution of fixed pictorial boundaries. The optical movement is evoked through interaction with the viewer, who "sets the work in motion" through their own movement. The title refers to Soto's origins and can be understood as a homage to his home country.

The rods are painted with yellow acrylic paint, and their thickness increases from 0.8 cm from the outside to 6 cm from the inside, in successive increments of 0.80, 1.2, 1.5, 1.7, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 5, and 6 cm. The rods clash against each other as a person enters, reaching an empty space inside measuring 71 cm x 71 cm, where a sound reminiscent of a dissonant ringing of bells is heard. Following his move to Paris in the early 1950s, the artist engaged in a dialogue with Optical Art and the experiments of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel, contributing decisively to the development of a new conception of the artwork: no longer a static object, but a perceptual phenomenon. At the core of his poetics lies the transcendence of traditional painting through the dissolution of form within space and time. Soto systematically investigated the mechanisms of vision, challenging the stability of the image through serial structures, linear textures, and overlays that generate optical vibrations. Renowned in this regard are his "Penetrables"—immersive environments where the viewer is invited to physically enter the work, becoming an integral part of it. This radical concept transforms the aesthetic experience into a total sensory event. The present work translates these principles with extreme consistency. The surface is animated by a background of dense, regular black and white vertical lines, constructing an unstable and pulsating visual field. Arranged upon this grid are polychrome square modules—orange, yellow, magenta, black, and white—organized according to a calibrated yet dynamic balance. The forms appear to emerge and recede simultaneously, producing an effect of suspension that defies perception and suggests a further spatial dimension. The dialogue between structure and discontinuity constitutes a key element of the composition: the almost musical regularity of the background is interrupted by chromatic blocks that introduce rhythmic accents and visual variations. In this way, Soto activates a continuous perceptual process, in which the image is never definitively fixed but is instead constructed through interaction with the viewer’s gaze. Ultimately, this painting represents an exemplary synthesis of his research: a work where formal reduction is accompanied by extraordinary phenomenological complexity, confirming the artist's ability to transform minimal elements—line, color, repetition—into an intensely dynamic and engaging visual experience.

JESÚS RAFAEL SOTO (Venezuela, 1923 - France, 2005). Untitled, 1992. Lithograph on Vélin d'Arches paper, copy 68/250. Signed and justified by hand. Measurements: 63 x 90 cm. Venezuelan artist formed in the School of Art of Caracas, Jesús Rafael Soto was an outstanding representative of the kinetic art, which he initiated and developed at the end of the fifties. Between the seventies and the nineties, already fully consecrated at the international level, he held important exhibitions in places such as the MOMA and the Guggenheim in New York, the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, etc. He also participated in the 1966 Venice Biennial and the 1996 São Paulo Biennial. Especially famous for his penetrable sculptures, he also carried out projects such as the decoration of the main hall of the Teresa Carreño Theater in Caracas. Soto was awarded Venezuela's National Plastic Arts Prize, and in 1973 the Venezuelan government inaugurated a museum in his honor in his native Ciudad Bolivar. He is currently represented in important collections such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
