Ettore Sottsass Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1917 - d. 2007

Ettore Sottsass (14 September 1917 – 31 December 2007) was a 20th century Italian architect, noted for also designing furniture, jewelry, glass, lighting, home and office wares, as well as numerous buildings and interiors — often defined by bold colors.

Sottsass was born in Innsbruck, Austria, and grew up in Turin, where his father, also named Ettore Sottsass, was an architect. The elder Sottsass belonged to the modernist architecture group Movimento Italiano per l'Architectura Razionale (MIAR), which was led by Giuseppe Pagano.

The younger Sottsass was educated at the Politecnico di Torino in Turin and graduated in 1939 with a degree in architecture.

After the invasion of Italy by the Anglo-Americans, Sottsass enlisted in the Monterosa Division, a division of the Repubblica Sociale Italiana led by Benito Mussolini and his Republican Fascist Party, to fight in the mountains alongside Hitler's army (Sottsass tells his adventures as a Lieutenant of the Monterosa Division in his autobiography “Scritto di Notte" published by Adelphi).

After his time in the military, Sottsass opened his own architecture and design firm in Milan, Italy. Here he started designing furniture and experimented with different color, patterns and shapes. His work was often associated with pop culture with his brightly colored whimsical objects. His pieces were often made out of glass and ceramic.

ETTORE SOTTSASS (Austria, 1917 - Italy, 2007). Thermo "Sherazade", 1996. Stainless steel and plastic. In original box. Measurements: 20,8 x 19,6 x 14,5 cm. Thermos with a curvilinear design inspired by the beautiful storyteller of the "Thousand and One Nights". This Sherazade thermos was designed by Ettore Sottsass for Alessi in the 1990s. The carafe, presented in its box, has a curved hourglass shape and is made of highly polished stainless steel. The contour of the lid, spout and handle are made from a bonded section of ABS plastic, as is the rounded screw cap. Sottsass is one of the most influential designers of the second half of the 20th century. On the one hand he developed a successful career in industrial design for Olivetti, from typewriters and computers to office interiors, and on the other he created striking and unconventional objects that challenged the bourgeois clientele to redraw their concept of the limits of "good taste". Between 1981 and 1988, Sottsass created markedly nonconformist furniture together with a small group of international architects, with whom he formed the Memphis group. The extreme ideas that Sottsass had already elaborated and sketched out in the previous decades were implemented in the 1980s, with a playful-looking ease, in collaboration with the Memphis founders. Together with them, Sottsass discarded traditional design principles and transformed a discipline that had hitherto been governed by production and functionality into a visually communicative spectacle. Like Sottsass himself, design became news, visual sensation and even tactile entertainment. He is currently represented at MoMA and the Metropolitan in New York, the Design Museum in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
