In einem vornehmen Interieur in einer halbrunden Nische sitzend, die von zwei Pilastern gerahmt wird und eine muschelartige Decke aufweist, zwei junge Frauen in innigem Gespräch, wohl Geheimnisse mitteilend; eine von ihnen hält dabei einen zartrosafarbenen Brief. Beide in modischen langen Kleidern aus glänzenden Seidenstoffen im Stil des Empire. Rechtseitig zudem ein stehender Schirm und ein liegender Strohhut mit Blütendekor. In dekorativem vergoldetem Rahmen. In einem mit wertvollen Möbeln und Objekten ausgestatteten Zimmer ein junges Paar. Sie in einem feinen langen, teils bestickten Kleid, auf einer Chaiselongue sitzend, hat ihren rechten Oberarm auf einem Kissen abgestützt und ihren ausgestreckten Zeigefinger zur Stirnseite geführt. Leicht verlegen mit geröteten Wangen blickt sie aus dem Augenwinkel heraus auf einen Kavalier in edler gold-grüner Kleidung, der sich auf die Sofalehne abgestützt hat und sie liebevoll anschaut. Auf einer großen Terrasse mit barocker Steinbrüstung, die die Abgrenzung zu einem teils sonnenbeschienenen Teich vor südlicher Landschaft bildet, eine junge Frau in einer Hängematte liegend. Sie trägt ein langes glänzendes, altrosafarbenes faltenreiches Kleid, das teils bis zum Boden reicht und hält in ihrer linken Hand einen Fächer aus weißen Federn. Nachdenklich hört sie einem elegant gekleideten Kavalier, dem sie den Rücken zuwendet, zu, der auf einem Stuhl sitzt mit seinem Hut in der rechten Hand. Er blickt sie mit Handgestus liebevoll an und scheint ihr gerade einen Antrag zu machen. NOTE: The son of well-known artist Charles Soulacroix (1825-1900), Frédéric Soulacroix excelled at painting detailed, realistic depictions of elegant figures in 18th and 19th century costume. His subjects are typically engaged in such pursuits as conversing and sharing secrets, relaxing, courtship, reflecting, enjoying tea and playing music. Soulacroix was a master at painting beautifully dressed members of French high society at leisure and in refined settings - mostly indoors, or more rarely, as in the present work, outdoors - with meticulous detail and with an emphasis on luxurious settings and accoutrements, along with shimmering satins and silks. Soulacroix was a prodigy: at the age of 15 he entered the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, and was admitted to the Scuola di Pittura just three years later.
