Attributed to Chaim Soutine, Russian, Jewish, French, 1893 to 1943, oil painting on cardboard depicting a portrait of a man. Inscribed, C. Soutine, on the backside. A paper label of Luftgaukommando, on the backside. Chaim Soutine was a Russian French painter of Jewish origin. Soutine made a major contribution to the expressionist movement while living in Paris. Inspired by classic painting in the European tradition, exemplified by the works of Rembrandt, Chardin and Courbet, Soutine developed an individual style more concerned with shape, color, and texture over representation, which served as a bridge between more traditional approaches and the developing form of Abstract Expressionism. Soutine was born Chaim Sutin, in Smilavichy in the Minsk Governorate of the Russian Empire, present-day Belarus. He was the tenth of eleven children. From 1910 to 1913 he studied in Vilnius at the Vilna Academy of Fine Arts. He soon developed a highly personal vision and painting technique. Chaim Soutine (Belarusian/French, 1893-1943) - Canard Pendu

          Est: $80,000 - $120,000

Chaim Soutine (Belarusian/French, 1893-1943) - Canard Pendu Signed ‘C. Soutine’ bottom left, oil on cradled board 18 x 10 1/2 in. (45.7 x 26.7cm) Provenance Lumilla Arnhold, New York. Christie's, New York, sale of November 16, 1983, lot 406. Acquired directly from the above sale. The Collection of Sidney Rothberg, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Lot Essay Ms. Esti Dunow has confirmed the authenticity of the present lot, along with Maurice Tuchman in 2023, when the work was scheduled to be included in the forthcoming supplement to their Soutine Catalogue Raisonné. It is in no small part thanks to the excellent eye and unwavering patronage of Philadelphia’s own, Dr. Albert Barnes, that the young Chaim Soutine gained national recognition as a major modernist painter. It was Barnes who, upon visiting the penniless twenty-nine year old Parisian painter’s studio in 1922 was captivated by Soutine’s The Pastry Chef (Le Pâtissier, c. 1919) and purchased it for his eponymous museum, along with some fifty other paintings through Soutine’s dealer Paul Guillaume. Barnes described Le Pâtissier as “an incredible, captivating, tangible, colorful pastry chef, cursed with a huge, magnificent ear, unexpected but right: a masterpiece.” In addition to pastry chefs, Soutine focused on painting waiters, imbuing them with haunting, disquieting qualities. The artist’s connection to, and preoccupation with, food and animals, has been well documented, and Canard Pendu certainly fits in nicely with this important part of the artist’s œuvre. It has been suggested that Soutine’s paintings of animal carcasses served as a launching point for Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst, while Soutine himself is known to have been inspired by Rembrandt’s Slaughtered Ox (1655) in the Musée du Louvre. Animals (as food) took on a complex place in Soutine’s life: they served a role in Jewish ritual–for example, chickens were employed in a Jewish prayer ceremony as part of the last meal before the Yom Kippur fast, but food was also in very short supply for Soutine, and the impoverished artist frequently suffered from bouts of hunger and stomach ulcers (he passed away at the early age of 49 from a perforated ulcer). Soutine had childhood memories of animals being slaughtered, stating, “Once I saw the village butcher slice the neck of a goose [...] I wanted to cry out, but his joyful expression caught the sound in my throat, this cry, I always feel it here.” Animals (as food) were also an important subject matter for Soutine, as in the present work. Indeed, famed art critic Clement Greenberg said Soutine’s art was “more like life itself than visual art.” A well-known 1927 photograph of the artist clutching a cigarette while posing with a dead chicken that hangs before a broken brick wall in Western France proves to be quite telling. In addition to ducks, Soutine painted geese, chicken, rabbits, turkeys, pheasants, and beef. He purchased these animals from local slaughterhouses, painting them as they rotted in his studio. While the subsequent odor prompted neighbors to call the police, Soutine was supposedly able to persuade them to keep the rotting animals for the sake of his art so long as he treated the animals with formaldehyde. Not only was “Chaim Soutine: Flesh” a fitting title for a 2018 Soutine retrospective at the Jewish Museum, New York, but it is noteworthy that a section of that 31-painting show was devoted to strung up birds entitled Fowl. In the present work, Soutine successfully demonstrates his ability to capture a favored subject in an unadorned, expressive, and dynamic fashion.

Lot Essay Amid the threat of German invasion, Soutine departed Paris in 1918, just five years after relocating to the city from his native Belarus. He sought refuge in Vence, in Provence. Accompanied by friend and fellow painter, Amedeo Modigliani, Soutine spent three years traveling through the lush, sun- drenched region. His exploration of the landscape–and his synthesis of traditional themes grounded in avant-garde techniques–took root during this extended sojourn. Works like La Petite Fille dans la Verdure, executed c. 1919, appear to pulsate with frenetic energy. Soutine’s use of bold color and animated brushstrokes creates a sense of heightened emotion, transforming the mundane–here, a young girl within grove of trees–into a dramatic and charged experience. Eschewing literal translation for visceral intensity, Soutine infuses his compositions with a sense of inner psychological turmoil–perhaps relating to the aftermath of the war or his own mental state–and of existential angst, reflecting the tumultuous times in which he lived. The war-torn landscapes of Europe during World War I found representation in Soutine's output from this period, where nature itself seems to be in a state of upheaval. After returning to Paris in 1922, Soutine showed over 50 works–the majority painted while in Provence–in an exhibition organized by dealer, Paul Guillaume. Esteemed Philadelphia collector, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, acquired the group, which today forms the cornerstone of The Barnes Foundation’s Soutine Collection. A number of these paintings–Landscape with Houses (c. 1919), Landscape with House and Tree (c. 1920-21), and Landscape with White Building (c. 1920-21)–bear affinity to the present lot. Together, Soutine offers a vision of landscape, architecture and, occasionally, figures in a way that is both dynamic and distorted–expressive and intimately linked to the artist's own lived experience. Soutine’s Provençal landscapes also demonstrate a profound engagement with the materiality of paint. Thick impasto, expressive brushwork, and a rhythmic interplay of light and shadow distinguish his canvases. This tactile quality not only adds depth to the composition but serves as a metaphor for the artist’s emotional investment in his subject matter. There’s something visceral, something raw, to these works; to Karel Appel, another of Sidney Rothberg’s favorite artists, “Soutine experienced the landscape like an animal.” By marrying avant-garde techniques with a deep emotional resonance, Soutine created a body of work that not only captures the spirit of the times but also challenges the traditional boundaries of landscape painting.

Die reifen Landschaften von Cagnes sind von einer luftigen und beschwingten Qualität Chaïm Soutine first visited Cagnes-sur-Mer in the south of France in 1918, accompanied by his fellow artist Amedeo Modigliani and his Polish dealer Léopold Zborowski, who made this trip possible for him by selling his works to the Swedish collector Jonas Netter. This enabled them to escape the bombing of Paris by the Germans. The present work, which he painted on this trip, is a rich and expressive example of Soutine's most successful landscapes from this important period of his creative development. His colour palette becomes brighter and more luminous, no doubt due to the summer climate of the Midi. The view of the town is characterised by its winding roofs and gnarled vegetation. He was an imaginative and distinguished painter who is remembered today as a titan of expressionism. Size: 34 1/2 x 93 in.

Cologne: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, 1993, p. 151, no. 39. (illus.). Note Under the threat of German invasion as World War I progressed, Chaïm Soutine left Paris for Vence in the south of France in 1918 with his friend and fellow painter Amedeo Modigliani. Soutine spent the next three years traveling throughout the sun-soaked region, perhaps his first time away from the city after moving to Paris from his native Smilovitz (in present day Belarus) in 1913. Soutine’s landscape painting developed during the artist's time in Provence, beginning with his visit to Vence in 1918-1919. Revered over time by artists and authors like Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, Marc Chagall, and D.H. Lawrence, Vence was considered the “heart of Provence” for its charm, seclusion and historic interest. The turbulence of Soutine’s painted landscapes from this time, roughly 1919-1922, suggest more about his own emotional state and personal psychology relating to the aftermath of the war, rather than an account of his direct observation of the Provençal landscape. The trees, bridges, mountains, and houses in his view became a means for his expression, an atmosphere he could deconstruct and exaggerate for his own purposes. Soutine returned to Paris in 1922 and the following year his dealer Paul Guillaume exhibited over fifty paintings in an exhibition, largely from his time in the south. Philadelphia collector Albert C. Barnes visited the gallery and purchased the entire oeuvre for his collection, transforming the little known and impoverished artist’s life and bestowing new importance upon his work. Many of the Barnes paintings, particularly Landscape with Houses (c. 1919), Landscape with House and Tree (c. 1920-21), and Landscape with White Building (c. 1920-21) relate directly to the turbulent Le Viaduc Rouge (c. 1919) on offer here. Painted quickly, with areas of thin and thick application, the disorienting landscapes twist and swirl under Soutine’s hand, with elements of the built environment, whether houses, a church, or a bridge at center, accentuating the undulating nature of Soutine’s line. The numerous bridges and viaducts connecting the Provençal towns Soutine visited, provided endless angles and plays of positive and negative space for his experimentation. In Le Viaduc Rouge, the structure appears to rise up out of the right side of the canvas, culminating in two central trees whose branches stretch up to a bright and turbulent sky. The Chaïm Soutine Le Viaduc Rouge comes from a prominent Philadelphia estate which also includes paintings by Jules Pascin, Armand Guillaumin, and other artists of the style that was popular in Philadelphia art circles during Barnes’s time. Soutine’s work in particular has garnered special attention recently, as Philadelphia’s Barnes Foundation and Les Musées d’Orsay et de l’Orangerie in Paris organized an exhibition in 2020-21 that emphasized the artist’s unique impact on Abstract Expressionist painter Willem de Kooning and his continuing legacy today. Soutine stands as a pivotal figure in European Modernism and Le Viaduc Rouge provides a vibrant and dynamic example of his work.
