Réalisée au début des années 1920, à un moment charnière de la carrière de l’artiste, cette œuvre appartient à la période où Soutine renouvelle profondément la peinture de paysage. Entre Paris et le Sud de la France, il développe alors une vision radicalement personnelle de la nature, libérée de toute recherche décorative, où chaque forme devient vecteur d’émotion. Ici, l’arbre motif central et récurrent dans son œuvre ne se contente pas de structurer la composition : il incarne la tension même du tableau. Le tronc, solide mais instable, semble soumis à une force invisible ; le feuillage, emporté par le vent, envahit l’espace pictural jusqu’à presque effacer le ciel, réduit à une mince respiration lumineuse. Les maisons, reléguées à l’arrière-plan, apparaissent comme absorbées par cette poussée organique, fragiles face à la puissance de la nature. Ce que Soutine peint, ce n’est pas un lieu précis, mais une sensation. La nature devient vivante, presque inquiétante, animée d’un mouvement intérieur que la touche nerveuse et tourmentée de l’artiste rend palpable. La matière picturale, épaisse, vibrante, semble travailler la surface comme un corps sous tension. La palette chaude et terrienne, dominée par des verts profonds, des ocres et des bruns incandescents, renforce cette impression de vitalité brute. Chaque coup de pinceau paraît chargé d’une urgence expressive, traduisant le rapport viscéral que Soutine entretient avec la peinture, mais aussi avec le monde qui l’entoure. Cette œuvre s’inscrit pleinement dans la lignée des grands paysages expressionnistes de l’artiste aux côtés de Les Maisons, Arbre couché, Le Village ou Paysage où la nature cesse d’être un décor pour devenir le véritable sujet, parfois même le protagoniste tragique de la scène. Plus qu’un paysage, ce tableau est une expérience. Une œuvre qui ne se livre pas immédiatement, mais qui, une fois comprise, ne lâche plus le regard. Elle impose sa présence, habite l’espace, et révèle peu à peu ce que Soutine cherchait : non pas représenter le monde, mais en faire ressentir la tension, la violence et la beauté intérieure. C’est précisément cette intensité, rare et profondément sincère, qui confère à cette peinture toute sa force, et qui explique pourquoi, aujourd’hui encore, l’œuvre de Soutine continue de bouleverser autant qu’elle fascine.

Juni 2025, dass es sich bei dem vorliegenden Werk um eine Arbeit von Chaïm Soutine handelt, in Kopie. Vor bergiger Landschaft an einem rechts aufsteigenden Hang zwei stehende Bäume, einer davon mit bereits herbstlich verfärbten gelb-bräunlichen Blättern. Der Baum, ein zentrales und wiederkehrendes Motiv im Werk des Künstlers, verkörpert die Spannung des Bildes selbst. Das Laub der Bäume als auch die Berge im Hintergrund reduzieren den hellblauen Himmel fast bis auf einen kleinen Lichtstreifen. Die wenigen Häuser mit ihren roten Dächern wirken angesichts der Kraft der Natur zerbrechlich. Soutine malt keinen bestimmten Ort, sondern drückt eher ein Gefühl aus. Die Natur wird lebendig, fast beunruhigend, nicht zuletzt durch den raschen Pinselstrich des Künstlers. Die warme, erdige Farbpalette, dominiert von tiefen Grüntönen, Ocker- und Brauntönen, verstärkt den Eindruck von Energie und Leben. Anmerkung: Der Künstler war ein französischer Maler belarussisch-jüdischer Herkunft. Einige Monate besuchte Soutine die Staatliche Hochschule der Schönen Künste Paris. Sie wurde von Fernand Cormon geleitet, der in den 1880er-Jahren van Gogh und Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec unterrichtet hatte. 1919 besuchte er Céret, dort entstanden bis 1922 etwa 200 Bilder, hauptsächlich Landschaften. In the opinion of expert Esti Dunow, the painting is an autograph work by Chaïm Soutine, probably executed in Paris in the early 1920s, during his stay in the South of France. During this period, Soutine developed a series of intensely expressive landscapes, such as Les Maisons, Paysage, Arbre couché, and Le Village, where nature becomes the protagonist through powerful energy and emotional brushstrokes. The theme of the tree, recurrent in Soutine's work, occupies a central place in this composition. In the foreground, a robust tree trunk and the movement of the foliage, stirred by the wind, dominate the scene, partially obscuring the houses glimpsed behind it and reducing the sky to a thin strip. The energetic brushstrokes and warm palette reinforce the sense of vitality and drama characteristic of the artist. Provenance: Spanish private collection, previously acquired in France, belonging to a significant private collection.

CHAÏM SOUTINE (Smilavichy 1893–1943 Paris) One incomparable gem is the small-format portrait of Chaim Soutine. Born the tenth of eleven children to a Jewish tailor in a small shtetl within what was then the Russian Empire – now Belarus – Soutine grew up in very poor and severe circumstances. In 1913, at the age of twenty, he fled this hostile environment to Paris, where he came into contact with the avant-garde at the École de Paris. The work shown here was created in the 1930s, when Soutine already enjoyed considerable public recognition. Still, he apparently never forgot entirely his origins, as the numerous portraits of simple servants and artisans, often of Eastern European background, attest. Painted with Soutine's characteristic expressive brushstrokes, the seated "garçon russe" fills the entire pictorial space. The impasto application of paint and the violent, impulsive style give the work a lively, almost vibrant texture and intensity. And yet, this small picture, painted on wood, exudes a sense of calm and intimacy. The dark red and brown tones contribute to this, as do the posture and expression of the seated boy, who is completely withdrawn. Wir danken Esti Dunow für die Bestätigung der Authentizität des Werks. Ein besonderes Juwel ist das kleinformatige Porträt von Chaïm Soutine. Geboren als zehntes von elf Kindern eines jüdischen Flickschneiders in einem kleinen Schtetl des damaligen Russischen Kaiserreichs (heute Belarus) wuchs Soutine unter sehr ärmlichen und strengen Bedingungen auf. Dieser kunstfeindlichen Umgebung entfloh er 1913 im Alter von zwanzig Jahren nach Paris, wo er mit der Avantgarde der École de Paris in Berührung kam. Das hier gezeigte Werk entstand in den 30er-Jahren, als Soutine bereits eine beachtliche öffentliche Anerkennung genoss. Trotzdem scheint er seine Herkunft nie ganz vergessen zu haben, wie die zahlreichen Porträts von einfachen Dienstboten und Handwerkern, oft mit osteuropäischem Hintergrund, bezeugen. Mit Soutines charakteristischen, expressiven Pinselstrichen gemalt, füllt der "Garçon russe" sitzend den gesamten Bildraum. Der pastose Farbauftrag und der heftige und impulsive Duktus verleihen dem Werk eine lebendige, beinahe vibrierende Textur und Intensität. Und dennoch geht von diesem kleinen auf Holz gemalten Bild eine Ruhe und Intimität aus. Die dunklen Rot- und Brauntöne sowie die Haltung und der Ausdruck des Jungen, der völlig in sich gekehrt dasitzt, tragen dazu bei. Auch sein Blick ist nach innen gerichtet – und doch fesseln die leuchtend blauen Augen, in denen man versinken mag.

Born in Smilovitchi, in the province of Minsk, Chaïm Soutine is one of the most prominent representatives of the School of Paris. Arriving in the city in 1912, he settled briefly at the artists' residence of La Ruche, in the Vaugirard district, and then at the Cité Falguière, both near Montparnasse. In the latter, he met Amedeo Modigliani through the sculptor Jacques Lipchitz. In the early 1920s, he traveled to the south of France, which inspired his tormented landscapes. Due to his exaggerated individualism, Soutine never officially adhered to any artistic movement, although for his passionate use of vivid colors he is considered one of the most notable representatives of Expressionism, developed according to a highly personal vision and pictorial technique. One of Soutine's hallmarks is his work in series. He alternately depicts gladioli, game, poultry, servants, and altar boys. His characters are melancholic, typified to the point of caricature, with deformed bodies and clothes featuring sharply contrasting colors. Lot Essay Ms. Esti Dunow has confirmed the authenticity of the present lot, along with Maurice Tuchman in 2023, when the work was scheduled to be included in the forthcoming supplement to their Soutine Catalogue Raisonné. It is in no small part thanks to the excellent eye and unwavering patronage of Philadelphia’s own, Dr. Albert Barnes, that the young Chaim Soutine gained national recognition as a major modernist painter. It was Barnes who, upon visiting the penniless twenty-nine year old Parisian painter’s studio in 1922 was captivated by Soutine’s The Pastry Chef (Le Pâtissier, c. 1919) and purchased it for his eponymous museum, along with some fifty other paintings through Soutine’s dealer Paul Guillaume. Barnes described Le Pâtissier as “an incredible, captivating, tangible, colorful pastry chef, cursed with a huge, magnificent ear, unexpected but right: a masterpiece.” In addition to pastry chefs, Soutine focused on painting waiters, imbuing them with haunting, disquieting qualities. The artist’s connection to, and preoccupation with, food and animals, has been well documented, and Canard Pendu certainly fits in nicely with this important part of the artist’s œuvre. It has been suggested that Soutine’s paintings of animal carcasses served as a launching point for Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst, while Soutine himself is known to have been inspired by Rembrandt’s Slaughtered Ox (1655) in the Musée du Louvre. Animals (as food) took on a complex place in Soutine’s life: they served a role in Jewish ritual–for example, chickens were employed in a Jewish prayer ceremony as part of the last meal before the Yom Kippur fast, but food was also in very short supply for Soutine, and the impoverished artist frequently suffered from bouts of hunger and stomach ulcers (he passed away at the early age of 49 from a perforated ulcer). Soutine had childhood memories of animals being slaughtered, stating, “Once I saw the village butcher slice the neck of a goose [...] I wanted to cry out, but his joyful expression caught the sound in my throat, this cry, I always feel it here.” Animals (as food) were also an important subject matter for Soutine, as in the present work. Indeed, famed art critic Clement Greenberg said Soutine’s art was “more like life itself than visual art.” A well-known 1927 photograph of the artist clutching a cigarette while posing with a dead chicken that hangs before a broken brick wall in Western France proves to be quite telling. In addition to ducks, Soutine painted geese, chicken, rabbits, turkeys, pheasants, and beef. He purchased these animals from local slaughterhouses, painting them as they rotted in his studio. While the subsequent odor prompted neighbors to call the police, Soutine was supposedly able to persuade them to keep the rotting animals for the sake of his art so long as he treated the animals with formaldehyde. Not only was “Chaim Soutine: Flesh” a fitting title for a 2018 Soutine retrospective at the Jewish Museum, New York, but it is noteworthy that a section of that 31-painting show was devoted to strung up birds entitled Fowl. Accompanied by friend and fellow painter, Amedeo Modigliani, Soutine spent three years traveling through the lush, sun- drenched region. His exploration of the landscape–and his synthesis of traditional themes grounded in avant-garde techniques–took root during this extended sojourn. Works like La Petite Fille dans la Verdure, executed c. 1919, appear to pulsate with frenetic energy. Soutine’s use of bold color and animated brushstrokes creates a sense of heightened emotion, transforming the mundane–here, a young girl within grove of trees–into a dramatic and charged experience.
