    Occult Philosophy.- Spare (Austin Osman) The Book of Pleasure (Self-Love): The Psychology of Ecstasy, first edition, illustrations, many full-page, bookplate of Edward Heron-Allen, manuscript note addressed to Edith loosely inserted, some surface soiling and toning, the odd spot, cracking at gutter, original black cloth, rubbed and bumped, uncut, folio, Co-operative Printing Society, 1913.*** Edward Heron-Allen (1861–1943) was a remarkable English polymath: a lawyer, scientist, violin maker, Persian scholar, and writer. He is best known for translating the poetry of Omar Khayyam and for his wide-ranging interests, from music and science to palmistry. He was married to Edith Heron-Allen.

    ⊕ AUSTIN OSMAN SPARE (BRITISH 1886-1956) AN ILLUSTRATION FOR 'EARTH INFERNO' signed with initials and dated 1904 lower left; pen and indian ink and grey wash on paper; 20.5 x 12.5cm; 8 x 5in (40 x 23cm; 15 3/4 x 9in framed) Provenance: Abbott & Holder, London A compilation of poems and aphorisms inspired by Dante's Inferno and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam made the core of Osman Spare's 'Earth Inferno' conceived during 1904 and self-published in 1905, for which this drawing must have been intended. It was designed in an aesthetic style influenced by one of Spare's early supporters Charles Ricketts. 265 signed copies were published. The dark menacing tone of the drawing leaps out of the page.

This copy with additional later prints, including a mounted (now loose) color print (photocopy? - captioned “Earth Inferno”), a large, laid-in color photograph of “Earth Inferno,” and a later print of “King of the Beasts” (an unpublished drawing for Earth Inferno - mounted, but now loose). Binding stitching and associated tears visible at gutters, some occasional foxing. Very good. FIRST EDITION OF SPARE’S FIRST BOOK, PUBLISHED WHEN HE WAS ONLY 18 YEARS OLD; THIS COPY INSCRIBED BY SPARE ON THE TITLE-PAGE: “To George Ryder from Austin O. Spare 1913”. Unnumbered copy. He is known for his unique artistic style, heavily influenced by art nouveau and symbolism, and for his involvement in esoteric and occult practices. Spare's work spans various mediums, including drawing, painting, and writing. Spare gained recognition as a precocious artist at a young age. He studied at the Royal College of Art in London but found himself at odds with the academic system and the prevailing art movements of his time.
