    Ruskin Spear RA (British, 1911-1990) A collection of prints 'Wish You Were Here' and 'At the Circus' two screenprints in colours, each signed 'Ruskin Spear' in pencil l.r., inscribed with title and numbered 103/140 and 136/140, respectively, together with: 'A Thin Edge' lithograph in colours, signed 'Ruskin Spear' in pencil l.r., inscribed with title and numbered 129/175; 'The Barmaid' an offset lithographic poster for the Royal Academy and London Underground, 1987, signed 'Ruskin Spear' in pen u.r. (sheets 75 x 99cm and 95 x 75cm, unframed, and similar sizes) (4) Condition Report: The prints have been previously rolled. 'Wish You Were Here' has a very faint smudge to the right of the signature. 'The Barmaid' poster has light creasing with some light dirty marks to the margins. All four prints appear to be in otherwise good condition.

The work offered for sale is believed to be 'Strawberry Mousse', exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1959, catalogue no. 184. A second painting of comparable size, titled 'The Ambassador’s Wife', is currently displayed behind the bar at Wiltons Restaurant, London. A third, smaller version of the composition was included in the Royal Academy’s Ruskin Spear Retrospective of 1980 and is reproduced in 'Ruskin Spear' by Mervyn Levy (Royal Academy Painters and Sculptors Series, Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1991), p. 19, no. 11.It was not previously known that three versions of this image existed, and further research is ongoing. However, Roger Spear is of the opinion that the present work is the original painting exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1959. We are grateful to Roger Spear for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of this lot. Condition Report: Unsigned. Damage in upper right corner where board is broken. Slight bowing to board. Light surface dust and dirt. A couple of small losses and chips to extreme edges. Scratch in upper right corner. Watermarks verso.
