Sold at Auction: Gene Speck

(1937)

Biography

American artist Gene Speck grew up in South Dakota, and he only taught himself to paint when he was in his 30s. In 1976, he moved to Nevada to purchase and operate a ranch. Gene Speck's paintings reflect his love of Western America's wide open spaces, large mountains, and deserts; all replicated on canvas using oil paints in natural shades. He puts specific emphasis on the pure light of gloaming, dusk, and dawn in his landscapes.

Gene Speck's paintings also include several of the Great Plains and Native American encampments that he saw during his youth in South Dakota. The worth of Gene Speck's paintings varies by medium and production, and original oil on canvas are generally the most expensive; however, there are affordable print versions available online.
