This represents the first map of China generated for an English atlas. The map features decorative borders showcasing costume portraits of Chinese, Burmese, and Japanese figures-including one of the earliest Western depictions of a Japanese samurai. The upper margin is adorned with early panoramas of Macao and Hangzhou alongside historic narrative vignettes. Korea is rendered entirely as an island. Printed text verso. Sheet measures 16.5 x 21.5 with a framed size of 22 x 27 inches. W.A.F front cover detached With bookplate for Edmund Dawe Wickham, inscribed to inside pages 'Bought at North Hill Sale/ Repurchased by me/ Edmund D Wickham Nov. 1. 1860'John Speed (1551 or '52 - 28 July 1629) was the best known English mapmaker of the Stuart period and yet he came to mapmaking late in life, producing his first maps in the 1590s and entering the trade formerly when he was almost 60 years old. He spent the early part of his career producing genealogies, Biblical maps, chronologies, and studies of antiquities. Among his projects of the early-seventeenth century was the History of Great Britaine, published with a royal privilege in 1611, the same year as the King James Bible, in which several of his genealogical diagrams were also included. The following year he published The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain a set of county maps of England and Wales, as well as maps of Ireland and Scotland. With these maps, Speed established his modus operandi, using existing maps by established cartographers, having his own plates engraved in Amsterdam, while the maps themselves were printed in London. Slight changes that he made can often be seen in new borders, showing costumed figures representing locals. In 1627, approaching his death and suffering from near blindness John Speed produced his final atlas. The first English world atlas, A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, was the product both of Speed's cartographic skill and his passion for all things historical. Composed of twenty-two maps, showing the continents, countries and world in two hemispheres, he also depicted the native inhabitants wearing their traditional clothing. From that first edition in 1627, the Prospect was bound with the Theatre and in the years following his death further editions of the work appeared in 1631, 1632, 1646, 1650, 1652, 1653-4, 1662, 1665, and 1676, published in succession by George Humble, then his son William, then William Garrett, followed by the Rea brothers, and finally by the firm of Bassett and Chiswell. The eighty-nine maps in total between the two works along with Speed's already established reputation for historical, geographical, and cultural analyses, provide a detailed and illuminating overview about the seventeenth-century European understanding of the world. While maps from this and other editions appear regularly auction, usually framed individually, it is rare for a complete or near complete bound set to be offered at auction. As the first atlas to be published by an Englishman, the work set a high standard for future generations of British mapmakers and confirmed Speed’s reputation within the history of cartography.

Bound in modern cloth retaining the early vellum upper cover. Cloth folding case. "THIS LATIN EDITION OF SPEED'S ATLAS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND IS EXTREMELY RARE" (Chubb). First published in English in 1606, Speed's Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine followed the model of Ortelius's Theatrum orbis terrarum in its title and its format, with map sheets backed by historical and geographical texts and gazetteers of place names. This was the one of the earliest attempts in England at producing an atlas on a grand scale, with the first detailed maps of Ireland, the first set of county maps consistently showing the boundaries of territorial divisions, and the first truly comprehensive set of English town plans-all notable contributions to British topography. Perhaps as many as fifty of the seventy-three towns had not been previously mapped, and about fifty-one of the plans were probably Speed's own work. Speed's son John may have helped him in surveying towns. One of the work's most significant contributions is the balance that was struck between the modern and historical, with information placed on the edges of the maps about antiquarian remains, sites and vignettes of famous battles, together with the arms of princes and nobles. Scotland is covered in less detail, as Scottish cartographer Timothy Pont was still in the process of surveying the country. Individual maps for the Theatre were prepared from about 1602, and plates were subsequently engraved by Jodocus Hondius, who was noted for his skill in decoration. George Humble was granted a privilege to print the Theatre for twenty-one years from 1608, and the Theatre and History were published together 1611-1612. An immediate success, three new editions and issues of each appeared in Speed's lifetime, including this Latin edition, and a miniature version was first published about 1619-1620. It shows Asia from India to Japan. Undeveloped land is filled by explanatory texts. Korea is still shown as an island and Japan is greatly enlarged and tilted. The vignette at the top left shows a remarkable means of transportation (a sort of land ship) and top right a crucifixion scene. Towards the top-centre are views of Macao and Quinzay (Hangchow). A blank coat of arms is found between them. Costumed characters decorate the sides of the map and sea monsters and ships adorn the seas.

John Speed (English, 1552-1629) Map of "The Kingdom of China newly augmented by JS 1626", hand coloured copper engraved double page map on laid paper, framed, 42.5 x 55.5cm. *Taken from John Speed's "Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World" this is the first atals and an one of the few maps of Asia to be published by an Englishman. It shows Asia from India to Japan. Undeveloped land is filled by explanatory texts. Korea is still shown as an island and Japan is greatly enlarged and tilted. The vignette at the top left shows a remarkable means of transportation (a sort of land ship) and top right a crucifixion scene. Towards the top-centre are views of Macao and Quinzay (Hangchow). A blank coat of arms is found between them. Costumed characters decorate the sides of the map and sea monsters and ships adorn the seas.

SPEED, John (English, 1551/52-1629). A New and Accurat Map of the World Drawne according to ye truest Descriptions... Engraved map. London, 1651 [But 1676, State 4 with the Bassett & Chiswell imprint]. 16 1/2" x 21 1/2" sheet. The Most Famous English World Map of the 17th Century. Among the earliest world maps available in English, and is notable for being one of the first maps to depict California as an island. Speed's world map is rarely found outside of the UK and therefore demand for the map - long recognised as a collector's item - has enhanced its rarity significantly of late. (Shirley, 317).
