CHARLES SPENCELAYH (Rochester, 1865 - Beckenham, 1958). "Children at Play." Miniature on bone. Measurements: 6 x 5.5 cm, 18 x 18 cm (frame). The work represents an endearing rural scene starring two children in an English village street. One of them advances carrying the other one on the shoulders while this one raises the cap in a happy and spontaneous gesture. In the background there are rural buildings and a female figure working, elements that place the scene within an everyday and popular environment. The painting is related to the British costumbrista tradition of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, very interested in representing simple scenes of rural life and children with a sentimental and narrative approach. During this period, many British artists developed a painting intended for bourgeois collecting, focused on humble characters, domestic scenes and idealized rural environments that conveyed a nostalgic vision of English folk life in the face of social changes resulting from industrialization. Charles Spencelayh was born in Rochester in 1865 and was one of the most renowned British painters of genre painting and anecdotal scenes. He studied at the National Art Training School in South Kensington and developed a career closely linked to the representation of popular characters, the elderly, children and scenes of everyday English life. His style is characterized by technical meticulousness, expressive detail and a marked narrative and sentimental sense. Throughout his career he exhibited in institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts and achieved great popularity among British collectors thanks to his compositions of a gentle and human character. Many of his works reflect the Edwardian taste for intimate and genre scenes, treated with great luminous sensitivity and psychological attention.

He became a favorite of Queen Mary, so much so he painted a miniature portrait of King George V to hang in her doll house. Spencelayh's penchant for capturing in stunning detail a person's face is clearly evident in this serious portrait of a woman of means who did not suffer fools gladly. But give the portrait a moment and features begin to soften, you see a once handsome woman looking into the not too distant future and is contented. "Self-portrait" or "WHY WAR? - 1939" Mixed media: watercolour, oil, gouache and graphite, 31 x 25.5 cm, signed and dated "C. SPENCELAYH. 1948." lower right. He painted this exceptional self-portrait in front of the pencil sketch of his famous painting "WHY WAR? 1939" (Painting measuring 95 x 115 cm - collection of the Harris Museum in London). An English painter, he painted with almost photographic detail and was a favourite of Queen Mary, who was a fervent collector. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892 until his death in 1958, including the 1939 painting "WHY WAR", in which he painted himself seated with a gas mask next to him and an open newspaper about Chamberlain's failure to make peace with Hitler. Delivery of lots free of charge in Paris (rue Drouot), Lyon or Marseille a few days after the sale, or shipment from France at the buyer's expense by the carrier of his choice. "Autoportrait" ou "WHY WAR ? - 1939" Technique mixte : Aquarelle, Huile, Gouache et Mine de plomb, 31 x 25,5 cm, signée et datée "C. SPENCELAYH. 1948." en bas à droite. Il a peint cet exceptionnel autoportrait devant l’esquisse au crayon de son célèbre tableau "WHY WAR ? 1939" (Peinture de 95 x 115 cm - collection du Musée Harris de Londres). Peintre anglais, il peignait avec un détail presque photographique et fut le peintre préféré de la reine Mary qui sera une fervente collectionneuse. Il exposa de 1892 à son décès en 1958 à la Royal Academy dont en 1939 "WHY WAR" (Pourquoi la guerre), il s’est peint assis avec près de lui un masque à gaz et un journal ouvert sur l’échec de Chamberlain pour faire la paix avec Hitler.
