    Jean Spencer,  British 1942-1998 -  White Relief I, c.1970;  assembled artist's board, 13.5 x 13.5 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  Redfern Gallery, London, LP29192 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame);  private collection, purchased from the above on the 2nd December 2014, inv. no.2091  Exhibited:  Redfern Gallery, London, 'Jean Spencer 1942-1998, Paintings, Reliefs & Works on Paper', 2nd-23rd December 2014 (illus. in cat. p.16)  Note:  this is a brilliant example of the artist's mature work, creating a highly refined language of abstraction based on a combination of mathematical principles and intuition. The use of pure white relief, relates her work to the pioneering work of Kenneth and Mary Martin. The artist exhibited with the Systems Group in the 1960s and 70s, alongside Jeffrey Steele, Peter Lowe and her later husband, Malcolm Hughes.  Her work was the subject of a memorial exhibition at the Tate in 1999 and is held by major public collections in the UK including Southampton Art Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery, Tate and the Arts Council Collection.

    § Jean Mary Spencer (1942-1998), Untitled, a painted wood and brushed aluminium relief sculpture, signed to the reverse 42 x 42cm Provenance: A gift from Spencer whilst she was teaching at Wychwood School, Oxford A founding member of the Systems Group, Jean Mary Spencer received her early education at Bath Academy of Art under the tutelage of Malcolm Hughes. Hughes, who eschewed representational art in favour of systemic abstraction, would become a pivotal influence on Spencer’s work. Following her graduation, Spencer and Hughes continued to work alongside one another, producing shallow abstract reliefs based on geometric and mathematic principles. In 1969, Spencer and Hughes, together with Jeffrey Steele and David Saunders, formed the Systems Group, which placed an emphasis on the importance of clarity and economy in art. As demonstrated by the present lot, their works were concerned with the possibilities and permutations afforded by mathematical models. In 1997, after a lifetime of working alongside one another, Hughes and Spencer married, though, tragically, they both died of cancer within a year of each other. In 2000, a memorial exhibition of their work was held at the Tate. Today, works by Spencer, both paintings and sculptures, are held in several public collections, most notably at the Tate, in the collections of the Arts Council, Reading Museum and of the University of Warwick.
