Notes: In this splendid drawing Christ rises triumphantly from his tomb surrounded by sleeping soldiers who had been set to guard it. The stone which had sealed the entrance to the tomb is seen at the top of the drawing. The composition and figures are reminiscent of Renaissance artists such as Uccello and Piero della Francesca, who had exerted a seminal influence on the development of Spencer’s style. Dated by the artist ‘Feb 1940’, the drawing was made in the year he was commissioned to record the war effort by the War Artists Advisory Committee which led to his major Shipbuilding on the Clyde series (Imperial War Museum). Fourteen years after the drawing, and a slightly smaller drawing of similar date, Spencer returned to the theme. He painted Christ Rising from the Tomb 1954 (private collection), the upper section of which follows this drawing with great fidelity. He added a lower section to the picture, in the manner of a predella below a Renaissance altarpiece. The work is one of several pictures of New Testament scenes painted towards the end of his life. In 1933 Sir Edward Beddington-Behrens invited Spencer to Saas-Fee, Switzerland, for a series of painting trips, covering the artist’s expenses in exchange for works produced during those visits. The present work, of a woman in traditional Swiss costume, remained in Sir Edward’s possession until his death in 1968 and thereafter passed through his family by descent. A figure wearing a similar hat can be seen to the left of the monumental oil Souvenir of Switzerland, 1933-34 (Private Collection).

    1940 lithographic poster in colours on thin wove issued by the Ministry of Information printed by Baynard Press, published by the National Gallery, London framed ARR Size:(image 70.5 x 98cm) Notes: Originally commissioned by the War Artists’ Advisory Committee in 1940, Stanley Spencer was tasked with recording wartime industry at Lithgows Shipyard in Kingston upon the River Clyde. Between 1940 and 1946, he produced a monumental series of seven triptychs depicting the various stages of ship construction: Burners, Riveters, Welders, Riggers, The Template, Bending the Keel Plate, and Plumbers. Shipbuilding was essential to Britain’s wartime survival. The vessels produced on the Clyde were vital for breaking through U-boat blockades in the Atlantic and maintaining the flow of food and arms to Britain and its Allies. Recognising the importance of public morale and the contribution of workers across all industries, the Ministry of Information commissioned images of these shipyard scenes for wide circulation, celebrating the workers of Clydebank as heroes of the home front. This poster reproduces the central panel from Burners. The original oil on canvas is held in the collection of the Imperial War Museum, London and can be seen as accession number IWM ART LD 433. Spencer captures the physically strenuous task of oxyacetylene welding- the labourers bathed in the warm glow of the cutting torches, three absorbed in their work and one wiping sweat from his brow in the heat of production. The print was produced by The Baynard Press, one of Britain’s most accomplished lithographic printers. Established by F. Sanders Phillips in 1894, Baynard was renowned for its technologically advanced lithographic processes, with machinery capable of producing large-format posters for transport and advertising. At the outbreak of the Second World War, the Baynard Press was made available to support the war effort. This edition was printed for display in canteens, schools, and other public spaces, helping to sustain national pride and motivation. Given their intended use, these posters were printed in large format and in relatively high numbers-possibly around 1,000 copies-though few examples survive today due to heavy public use and changing post-war priorities. This work captures the spirit of Britain’s wartime resilience and stands as a material testament to the power of art and propaganda in uniting a nation under strain.

Julian Morrell, September 1920, pencil on cream wove paper, half-profile to the left, lightly foxed, small nick in left-hand edge, verso with pencil inscription in the hand of the sitter 'Julian Morrell by Stanley Spencer', sheet size 35.5 x 25.4 cm (14 x 10 ins) QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Julian Morrell (1906-1989), daughter of society hostess and patron of the arts Lady Ottoline Morrell (1873-1938); thence by descent. The Morrells lived at Garsington Manor, Oxfordshire, and the Garsington Visitors Book (held by the British Library) shows that brothers Gilbert and Stanley Spencer visited the Manor the weekend of 24-27th September 1920. Julian Morrell subsequently recalled that the two artists sat down together to draw her (see the portrait by Gilbert Spencer also offered in this sale).

(2)Provenance:From the Estate of Sir Stanley Spencer In 1954, Spencer visited China as part of a cultural delegation that included Leonard Hawkes, Hugh Casson, John Chinnery, Rex Warner and A.J Ayer. While staying in Peking he visited the Valley of the Ming Tombs, completing only two paintings of the sacred site. The only other occasions that he had travelled outside the UK, apart from during the war, were to Yugoslavia and Switzerland. Commenting on his painting of the Tombs he wrote to Dudley Tooth That Ming Tomb painting will never happen with me again. It is charged with the feeling of that place, and I was a bit disturbed while doing it, at being thousands of miles away. It might have been another planet (Stanley Spencer RA, Royal Academy of Arts, 1980, Exhibition Catalogue, p.218).
