The quote in the bottom right comes from a travel guide book author who recommended 'conducted tours' on the newly constructed railroads through serene locations designed as escapes from the crowded, busy city.

Original antique travel poster for Ripon issued by the London North Eastern Railway LNER featuring colourful artwork by Walter E. Spradbery (1889-1969) depicting a tree lined river flowing over rocks with Ripon Cathedral visible in the background, the bold title text and information in French on the margin - LNER Ripon via Chemins de Fer de Londres et de Nord-Est de la Grande Bretagne. The historic city of Ripon is located in the Borough of Harrogate in north Yorkshire on the tributaries of the River Ure and the Laver and Skell rivers; founded originally as a monastery in the 660s, the early English gothic style Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid was built in 1160-1547 and became a cathedral in 1836. Printed by John Waddington Ltd. Good condition, restored folds, restored tears, restored tear through text, browning, minor staining, backed on linen. Country of issue: UK, designer: Walter E. Bright lithograph poster advertising the Green Line coaches as a means of travel to observe spring flowers in the Greater London area. 40 x 25”. Expertly repaired losses in corners and margins; a few restored small losses in image. Linen backed. B+. Spradberry studied at Walthamstow Art School and exhibited at the Royal Academy. He designed numerous posters for London Transport and Underground, as well as British Railways and LNER. His posters are held at the British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and other prominent institutions.

Great illustration by Walter E. Spradbery (1889-1969) featuring a scenic view of a tree lined country road leading an historic entrance gate to Ashtead Park in Surrey with a quote below from the poem In Memoriam LXXXIX published in 1850 by the Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) next to the roundel logo. The London General Omnibus Company operated bus services from 1855-1933; the company was bought by the London Underground group in 1912 and formed part of the new London Passenger Transport Board in 1933. Spradbery was a landscape painter, lino-cut artist and poster designer. He designed over 90 posters for London Transport.
