Cowan's Auctionsfine portrait of prominent Bostonian Mrs. Jonathan Amory by noted artist, Richard Staigg. Painting has label on reverse from Doll & Richards Inc. in Boston. It also has an old inventory label and number from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It also has a very old, probably original, handwritten label on reverse of frame identifying the sitter. Mrs. Jonathan Amory was the daughter of James Sullivan, who was governor of Massachussetts. Lot is accompanied by extremely fine period, most likely original framing.

Rachel Davis Fine ArtsRICHARD MORRELL STAIGG (Anglo-American, 1817-1881) PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF JAMES INGERSOLL watercolor on ivory; signed and dated Staigg 1868, l.r.; depicting Ingersoll facing left with black jacket with gold buttons and black cravat; 4 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches; framed: 6 x 5 inches Provenance: The Tuckerman Family; by descent to current owner Other Notes: In late 1872, James Ingersoll was convicted on two counts of forgery, and served two-and-a-half years in jail for his part in the Tammany Hall "Ring", the New York City Democratic political machine lead by William "Boss" Tweed that pilfered million's of dollars from the city in the form of fraudulent contracts and bonds. This portrait was painted in 1868, during the time the monies were said to have flowed through Ingersoll's company and distributed amongst "Ring" members. The scandal later made Ingersoll the target of negative political cartoons by Thomas Nash.
