Born in New York to Greek immigrant parents, Stamos’s work was deeply informed by a "biomorphic" sensibility, seeking to bridge the gap between the primordial natural world and the internal spiritual landscape. His career was marked by a profound mastery of light and color, evolving from the dense, organic forms of the 1940s to the expansive, meditative canvases of his later years. Despite the professional controversies that shadowed his later career following the Rothko estate trial, Stamos remained a relentless innovator, eventually retiring to the Greek island of Lefkada, where the brilliant Mediterranean light became his final and most enduring muse. The Infinity Field series, which occupied Stamos from 1970 until his death in 1997, represents the artist’s ultimate distillation of the "Color Field" movement. Der Zusatz "Lefkada" verweist auf die griechische Insel, die eine zentrale Rolle in Stamos' Leben und künstlerischer Identität spielte - sowohl als Ort persönlicher Verwurzelung als auch als spirituelle Quelle. Die Bildsprache dieser Werke ist reduziert, aber niemals leer: Sie lebt von der Spannung zwischen Fläche, Struktur und Raumtiefe. In leuchtendem Rot gehalten, zieht dieses grossformatige Gemälde die Betrachtenden sofort in seinen Bann. Der rechteckige Farbblock in der Mitte, dessen Kanten leicht unregelmässig und von weich verlaufenden Linien begrenzt sind, scheint über dem kräftigen roten Grund zu schweben. Innerhalb dieses zentralen Feldes variieren die Rottöne subtil - von samtigem Dunkelrot bis hin zu fast violetten Schattierungen -, was dem Werk eine stille, fast meditative Tiefe verleiht. Zwei horizontale, unregelmässige Linien in einem helleren Rotton durchziehen das Bildfeld wie Spuren oder Wellenbewegungen als Andeutung von Landschaft, Horizont oder spiritueller Trennungslinie. The 'Infinity Field' series was created in the later creative period of the American painter Theodoros Stamos, who was of Greek descent. During this time, he became increasingly interested in the idea of the transcendent and meditative. The addition 'Lefkada' refers to the Greek island that played a central role in Stamos' life and artistic identity, serving as both a place of personal roots and a spiritual source. The visual language of these works is minimalist yet never empty: it thrives on the tension between surface, structure and spatial depth. Rendered in luminous red, this large-format painting immediately captivates the viewer. The rectangular block of colour in the centre appears to float above the vibrant red ground, its slightly irregular edges defined by softly flowing lines. The shades of red within this central field vary subtly, from velvety dark red to almost violet hues, giving the work a quiet, almost meditative depth. Two irregular, horizontal lines in a lighter shade of red traverse the pictorial field like traces or waves, suggesting a landscape, a horizon or a spiritual dividing line.
