[ART] Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA RBA (1793-1867) was a prominent English marine painter

              Est: $75 - $100

[ART] Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA RBA (1793-1867) was a prominent English marine painter, often inaccurately credited as William Clarkson Stanfield. He was briefly apprenticed to a coach decorator in 1806, but left owing to the drunkenness of his master's wife and joined a South Shields collier to become a sailor. In 1808 he was pressed into the Royal Navy, serving in the guardship HMS Namur at Sheerness. Discharged on health grounds in 1814, he then made a voyage to China in 1815 on the East Indiaman Warley and returned with many sketches. An accident forced Stanfield to leave active service, but during his voyages he had acquired considerable skill as a draughtsman. In August 1816 Stanfield was engaged as a decorator and scene-painter at the Royalty Theatre in Wellclose Square, London. Along with David Roberts he was afterwards employed at the Coburg theatre, Lambeth, and in 1823 he became a resident scene-painter at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where he rose rapidly to fame through the huge quantity of spectacular scenery and (moving) dioramas which he produced for that house until 1834. Meanwhile, Stanfield developed his skills as an easel painter, especially of marine subjects; he first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1820 and continued, with only a few early interruptions, to his death. Offered here is an envelope hand-addressed, and signed, by Stanfield. Approx. 4-1/2 x 2-3/4 in. VG.

Rahmen.

Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, RA RBA,  British 1793-1867-  Hauling in the lifeboat;  pencil, watercolour and bodycolour heightened with white on buff paper, 18.8 x 27 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 28 April 1983, lot 219.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, often described as 'William Clarkson Stanfield', was a prolific and prominent painter and watercolourist, and the father of painter George Clarkson Stanfield (1828-1878). He is particularly celebrated for his dramatic maritime scenes, of which the present work is a fine example. Here, Stanfield has implied a shipwreck without showing the wreckage, instead depicting a throng of people who help to pull in a lifeboat, undoubtedly carrying those who have been rescued. His generous application of white to illustrate the foam of the crashing waves effectively emphasises the sheer force of the water, and contrasts sharply with the deep blue of the heavy clouds above.

Oil painting on canvas Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (SUNDERLAND, 1793 - LONDON, 1867) Stanfield was a well-known English painter known for his large-scale paintings of dramatic subjects and seascapes. From 1820 until the year of his death, the artist exhibited his works at the Royal Academy with marine and landscape subjects, which drew inspiration from travels in his homeland, France, Germany, Italy and Ireland. The art critic John Ruskin considered his treatment of the sea and clouds to be of the highest standard and defined him as one of the most skilled English realists. Stanfield's spectacular and scenic touch combined with dry and hard color are effective tools for depicting different atmospheric conditions and the brutal power of nature that makes man vulnerable. In the painting Ship in a Storm with Boats l The artist paints boats in difficulty during a storm and the arrogance of the storm that lashes out against the port village therefore represents the accurate synthesis of his artistic creed.
