Stanisław Jonas, a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, built a life of purpose and compassion in New York as a respected psychiatrist and counselor. His deep appreciation for the arts was more than a personal passion; it was an extension of his worldview and a form of cultural preservation. Alicja Jonas, a gifted pianist, composer, and teacher, brought her own artistic brilliance to their shared life. Having endured the hardships of wartime Poland, she immigrated to the United States in the late 1960s to reunite with Stanisław and dedicated her career to music education and composition. Together, the Jonas’s created a home filled with creativity, conversation, and artistic exploration. Their art collection reflects not only a refined aesthetic sensibility but also a lifetime of personal connections with artists and gallerists. Many of the works were acquired directly from artists whose work they admired and whose friendships they cultivated. Their relationships with key figures in the Polish and New York art scenes were essential to the development of their collection. Among the artists represented are Barbara Falender, known for her intimate sculptural forms; Rafał Olbiński, celebrated for his dreamlike surrealism; Stanisław Młodożeniec, whose expressive color and form shaped postwar Polish painting; and Krystyna Brzechwa, whose delicate compositions reflect a poetic sensibility. The collection also includes two exceptional works by Henryk Stażewski, one of the leading figures of the Polish avant-garde and a pioneer of geometric abstraction in Eastern Europe. These pieces, rare in both quality and provenance, anchor the collection in the broader trajectory of modernist innovation. Over the years, the Jonas’s cultivated meaningful relationships with several galleries that supported emerging and established Polish artists, including the Zabriskie Gallery, and Z. Michael Legutko Gallery. Their collecting was never speculative; it was personal, intentional, and grounded in dialogue, friendship, and shared cultural history. This auction offers not only a selection of fine works of art but also a portrait of a life deeply engaged with the creative world. Exhibition history (according to 1980 institutional publication): Tampa Art Institute; University of Florida Gallery, Gainesville, FL.; Hunter Gallery (now Hunter Museum of American Art), Chattanooga, TN, 1965. Biographical note: Sculptor Richard Stankiewicz was most closely associated with the Assemblage movement. He served in the U.S. Navy 1941-1947, then studied with Hans Hofmann at the Hoffman School in New York City, and with Fernand Leger and Ossip Zadkine in Paris. After he returned to the United States, he began to create assembled sculptures using scrap metal and discarded mechanical and household equipment. Stankiewicz was also an art educator and held positions at the State University, New York, Albany, 1967 and at Amherst College from 1970-71 (Sources: Matthew Baigell, Dictionary of American Artists, and Peter Hastings Falk, ed., Who Was Who in American Art ). Often called "Junk Art", Stankiewicz's works were created from discarded scrap metal welded together into abstract figures. He titled his works in reference to what the figures were according to his imagination, which often had a sense of humor. As the separate scraps come together in rhythmic, buoyant forms, the culmination transcends the "Junk Art" label. Stankiewicz's work is an extension of his biography. In 1928, Stankiewicz and his mother moved from Philadelphia to the Rust Belt city of Detroit. During the Great Depression, they lived in a small apartment neighboring a foundry dump, where Stankiewicz used to play and create his own toys from the scrap. He studied mechanical drafting before entering the Navy in 1941. While he was stationed in the Pacific, Stankiewicz would carve figures from found wood and animal bones. After his service, he moved to New York and studied under Hans Hofmann, followed by instruction from Fernand Léger and sculptor Ossip Zadkine in Paris. Back in New York by 1952, Stankiewicz helped to found the Hansa Gallery alongside Wolf Kahn, where he would show his welded scrap metal sculptures. He was widely exhibited in New York and internationally, though Stankiewicz felt that the market for his work had cooled in 1965 since he had moved to Massachusetts. Finding fault with his representation at Stable Gallery at the time, he did not exhibit in New York until connecting with Zabriskie in 1972. His work came back to New York with new vigor. According to Donadio, describing Stankiewicz's work from the beginning of the 1960s, "He made heads that took the Urchin form, a section of cylindrical pipe, which he treated like a tunnel and filled with assorted discards of hardware. But at the same time he made two-faced Janus heads, sculptures with two primary surfaces and exaggerated facial expressions. With their grotesque and scary facial features, these stelae often bore names like Double Booger for a Little John, or The Suicide. The first of these was later described as a "spirit trap" for a person the artist detested. The latter may have been a meditation on the death of Ernest Hemingway, whose suicide was front-page news in the summer of 1961. The contrast between his untitled and his named works was becoming extreme."

RICHARD STANKIEWICZ (1922-1983): UNTITLED Corten steel, 1971-9, signed with initials 'R.S.' and dated at top. 40 x 20 x 22 in. Note: American sculptor Richard Stankiewicz emerged as an artist during the peak years of Abstract Expressionism. Working primarily with found and scrap metal, Stankiewicz created large, heavy sculptures imbued with a sense of lightness and humor. His work figures stylistically between early and late Modernism, with roots in Surrealism, Cubism, and later prefiguring Minimalist sculpture.
