STANLEY HENRY M.: (1841-1904) British Explorer & Journalist. A.L.S., Henry M Stanley, four pages, 8vo, Balinakill, Kintyre, Scotland, 9th July 1885, to Miss Felicie Hegemans. Stanley informs his correspondent that with regret 'it has not been my good fortune to be able to pay a visit to the kindly, sympathetic & warm hearted people of Cadogan Gardens', explaining that 'various circumstances and a singular unbroken run of engagements mainly have prevented me from paying my respects to yourself & the sister graces who did me the honor to escort me round Hampton.' Stanley continues 'In respect to your invitation - re Mons Hegemans I fear that I shall never have the courage to pay a visit to a stranger, simply because I am on a visit to Anvers ... Even in London it is a difficult matter to get me out of my chambers…' and concludes 'However Mons. Moscheles is such a friend of your father & has spoken so warmly of him I should look more to him to bring us together rather than to myself ... Should I be in Anvers it would be better for Mons Hegemans to call on me at my hotel when it would be most likely it would not require much persuasion to induce me to accompany him to his House especially as the charming Miss Felicie would be there.' Some light overall age toning and a small tear at the base of the central vertical fold, only very slightly affecting a couple of words of text, but not the signature, about VG The present letter was written from Balinakill in Kintyre, the home of Sir William Mackinnon (1823-1893) Scottish Shipping Magnate. Mackinnon had plans to lease from the Sultan of Zanzibar a vast area of East Africa from the coast to the Congo, which the British Government refused to sanction. He also played the major part in financing Stanley's Emin Pasha expedition. Felix Stone Moscheles (1833-1917) English Painter, Peace Activist and Advocate of Esperanto. Moscheles lived at Cadogan Gardens and had recently painted Stanley's portrait.

Original pictorial red cloth stamped in black and gilt. Short closed tear to two of the folding maps, spines somewhat faded, but a fine, attractive set overall. A FINE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION, SUBSCRIPTION ISSUE, documenting Stanley's somewhat "crazed" expedition up the Congo and across to East Africa to rescue Emin Pasha, who subsequently died having been rescued falling from a building. Conrad used Stanley's expedition as a source for his work "Heart of Darkness."

Publisher's half morocco, vellum gilt-blocked boards, top edge gilt, others untrimmed (minor rubbing at extremities). LIMITED EDITION, NUMBER 11 OF 250 COPIES OF THE DEMY QUARTO EDITION DE LUXE, SIGNED BY STANLEY on limitation leaf. Stanley and Emin entered Bagamoyo on their donkeys, some way ahead of their caravan, on 4 December, 1889. It was sensational news. Emin was safe, although the expedition to relieve him had cost the lives of at least seven hundred people. Stanley began his account of the rescue at the Hotel Victoria, Cairo, on the 25 January 1890, working on it continuously for 50 days at the rate of 20 printed pages per day. The first portion of the manuscript was delivered to the printer's on 12 March and the last proof sheet returned for printing by Clowes on 3 June. "It may be safely asserted ... that no work of travel of this magnitude was ever before produced in so short a space of time" (Author's and Publisher's Note, p. iv). Hosken, p. 189.

Wood-engraved frontispiece of Stanley and Kalulu, 27 wood-engraved plates, 5 lithographic maps, 4 folding, one with Stanley's survey route of Lake Tanganika printed in red and green. (The two larger maps cleanly torn and mounted on linen.) Original brown cloth, upper cover and spine with gilt-stamped vignettes (Small tears, gilt somewhat rubbed, spine frayed at head and foot, lower corners bumped, front inner hinges split.). Provenance: presented by Stanley to James Tooley (presentation inscription by the author, see below); sold at Sotheby's, 13 November 1929, lot 447, to Bernard Quaritch for 3 10s (collation note signed E.M.S. at end of vol.); H.M. Stanley (sold by his descendants, Christie's London, 24 September 2002, lot 24). PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, with inscription to [James] Tooley on half title reading: "For the sake of that sweet friendship begun between us at Constantinople in 1870 please accept this book my dear Tooley/from yours sincerely/Henry M. Stanley March 14th 1873." This copy also contains a tipped-in 1 PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM STANLEY TO TOOLEY, dated American Consulate General Constantinople March 31 1870, and a head and shoulders carte de visite portrait of Stanley, by Abdullah Fréres, Constantinople inscribed on verso by Stanley "April 7th 1870, Sympathetically yours Henry M. Stanley." In the letter, Stanley thanks him for the telegram from Beirut, which proposed a meeting between them at Smyrna. He is unable to leave Constantinople, being "so overwhelmed with matter for writing ... having just returned from a month's travel in the Crimea and Southern Russia, and for all this I have to render full account in the 'Herald.'" He therefore suggests that Tooley "come up to Stamboul after two or three days stay at Smyrna. Our people here are truly gracious to 'Herald' men, and as the church of St. Polycarp at Giaour Ismir has but few attractions the delights of true believing Stamboul await you." If Tooley "cannot come up directly," Stanley wishes him "to state the route you have taken from India up here, and give in brief contents of letters sent by you to the 'Herald' office since you left Bombay. This I desire to know, because it will govern my route, and I shall be able to avoid rewriting what perhaps may have been so ably written by you ...." (some browning to letter and fragility to folds). When Stanley met James Gordon Bennett, editor and proprietor of the New York Herald, in the Grand Hotel, Paris, on 16 October 1869, to be given the instruction to go to central Africa to find Livingstone, he was also given other commissions to fulfill first. These included a visit to Constantinople to "'find out about that trouble between the Khedive and the Sultan. Then,'" Bennett told him, "'let me see -- you might as well visit the Crimea and those old battle grounds. Then go across the Caucasus to the Caspian Sea; I hear there is a Russian expedition bound for Khiva. Thence you may get through Persia to India; you could write an interesting letter from Persepolis. Bagdad will be close on your way to India; suppose you go there and write up something about the Euphrates Valley Railway. Then, when you have come to India, you can go after Livingstone ....'" (Jacob Wassermann, H.M. Stanley Explorer, 1932, pp. 53-54). So, before even beginning his expedition to rescue Livingstone in 1871, Stanley reported on the opening of the Suez Canal, made a journey down the Nile, visited Jerusalem to report on the latest excavations, then journeyed to Constantinople, arriving early in February 1870, going from there to the Caucasus, to Batum, Tiflis, Baku, Resht, Teheran, Shiraz, Bushire and Bombay, before at last reaching his starting point for the Stanley expedition at Zanzibar. This copy of How I found Livingstone, with its emotionally-frank inscription and fascinating letter to Tooley, therefore links two key periods in Stanley's life, the widely-celebrated first expedition to central Africa, and the much less well known but hardly less remarkable year of journalistic travel undertaken before it. cf. STANLEY HENRY M.: (1841-1904) British Explorer & Journalist. An unusual Autograph Statement Signed, Henry M. Stanley and Bula Matari (in the third person), one page, oblong 8vo, London, 2nd July 1885. On a page, evidently removed from an album, Stanley has penned, in full, '"Bula Matari" of Congo Land in common with the many admirers who in the preceeding pages have subscribed their names to their professed admiration for the fair Felicie adds his English signature thus:- Yours sincerely Henry M. Stanley' adding the place and date beneath. Rare in this form. VG. Bula Matari, which appears on Stanley's grave stone at Pirbright, Surrey, translates as 'Breaker of Rocks' or 'Breakstones' in Kikongo, and was Stanley's name among locals in Congo. It can be interpreted as a term of endearment for Stanley, as the leader of King Leopold II of Belgium's expedition of 1877, often worked with labourers breaking rocks with which they built the first modern road along the Congo River. The name may also be interpreted in less flattering terms, and it was suggested by Adam Hochschild that while Stanley believed it to be an heroic epithet, his Congolese companions understood it in a mocking and pejorative tone.
