STAPRANS , RAIMONDS 1926 Riga–2026 San Francisco Title: "Late Afternoon". Date: 1993. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 56 x 63 cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower left: STAPRANS-93. Titlted upper left verso: "LATE AFTERNOON". Frame: Framed. Provenance: - Private collection Berlin -Private collection Berlin - A leading figure in the ‘Bay Area Figurative Movement’, which also includes Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn - His works are held in major public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Museum of Fine Arts, San Francisco - A characteristic fusion of figuration and abstraction through clear, two-dimensional colour compositions - ‘Late Afternoon’ captivates with its bold colours, skilful use of light and balanced composition Raimonds Staprans is regarded as one of the defining figures of Latvian-American painting in the twentieth century. Staprans is known for his stylized depictions of landscapes, still lifes, and architecture, characterized by vivid geometric forms and bold colors. Born in Riga in 1926, he emigrated with his family to the United States in 1947. He studied art at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked, among others, with Hans Hofmann. In addition to painting, Staprans was also active as a writer; his plays offer revealing insights into his artistic process. His painting is distinguished by an independent synthesis of figuration and abstraction. Closely aligned with artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Staprans employed broad color fields to define form and light. His works are marked by a calm, concentrated pictorial presence and may be situated between European modernism and American postwar painting. The painting Late Afternoon (1993) exemplifies these qualities with particular clarity. At its center stands a simple gabled building whose clear geometry determines the composition. Strong, contrasting color planes structure the pictorial space: a deep blue forms the background, while the house appears in luminous red, accented by pale, impasto-like roof surfaces. Sharply defined edges and reduced detail direct attention to the interplay of form, light, and space. The light of late afternoon manifests itself less through naturalistic representation than through the intensity of color and subtle gradations of shadow. Within Staprans’ oeuvre, the work stands as a characteristic example of his focus on architectural motifs, which he transforms into quiet, timeless pictorial spaces. Estimated shipping costs for this lot: The lot is unsuitable for parcel shipping. Raimonds Staprans: Bernicia #3

    Est: €50,000 - €70,000

STAPRANS , RAIMONDS 1926 Riga–2026 San Francisco Title: Bernicia #3. Date: 1993. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 111 x 124 cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower right: STAPRANS-93. Signed verso top left: BENICIA #3. Frame: Framed. Provenance: - Private Collection Berlin - A characteristic painting by the Latvian-American artist - A leading figure in the renowned ‘Bay Area Figurative Movement’ - A museum-quality composition of great artistic merit and high recognisability “When you step off the plane in San Francisco, you are dazzled by the incredible intensity of the sun. The light is so glaring and aggressively intense that you almost automatically reach for your sunglasses. And so it goes for eight months of the year – nothing but blue skies and this blinding light. You simply cannot ignore it.” (Raimonds Staprans, „Vier Betrachtungen“, in: Exhibition catalogue, Galerie Redmann, Berlin 1988, pp. 3–13, here p. 13) From Latvia to the United States His work is regarded as one of the defining positions of painting on the American West Coast. Raimonds Staprans—Latvian-American painter and playwright—developed a distinctive visual language in his landscapes, still lifes, and architectural depictions. He belongs to the first generation of California’s Bay Area Figurative Movement. Staprans’ biography is closely intertwined with the turbulent history of twentieth-century Europe. Born in Riga in 1926, he initially fled with his family to Germany following the Soviet invasion before emigrating to the United States in 1947. There, until 1952, he studied art under Alexander Archipenko and Mark Tobey, as well as literature at the University of Washington in Seattle. From 1952 to 1954, he continued his studies under Hans Hofmann and Karl Kasten at the University of California, Berkeley. Staprans passed away in January 2026 at the age of 99 in San Francisco. West Coast Modernism From an art historical perspective, Staprans belongs to the generation of American painters on the West Coast who transformed everyday motifs into a highly simplified, minimalist visual language inspired by Abstract Expressionism. Intensely luminous colors, precisely contoured objects, and sharply defined light-and-shadow modeling characterize his paintings. At the core of his work lies a consistent concentration on the autonomous effect of color and form, as well as the architectural organization of pictorial space—situated between abstraction and figuration. “I concern myself with the dissection of cast shadows,” the artist remarked, “their color as much as the possibility of transforming them into abstract patterns. And finally, it is color—blue, there is such a thing as a Californian blue.” (Raimonds Staprans, quoted in 10 Jahre Galerie Redmann, exhibition brochure, Berlin 1987, unpaginated). Architecture of Stillness The painting Benicia #3—depicting a coastal house in the small harbor town on the Carquinez Strait northeast of San Francisco—is a striking example of Raimonds Staprans’ sun-drenched painting. The simple scene, immersed in the glaring light of California, is devoid of human presence and entirely motionless. The modest, unadorned building stands out sharply against the cloudless steel-blue sky; its pale wall surfaces, cool turquoise, and delicate yellow tones, together with the clearly defined shadows, create a carefully structured interplay of color and architecture. The lines are strict and exact, the surfaces simplified, and the effect of light heightened. In this way, Staprans creates an image of remarkable formal discipline: sober, concentrated, and at the same time imbued with a quiet, almost meditative atmosphere. Completely free of narrative elements and any form of illustration, Staprans’ painting exists entirely on its own terms, devoted to the autonomy of color and form—and derives from this commitment a singular and incomparable magic. Transport only by shipping company after consultation following the auction. additional shipping insurance Shipping insurance up to total invoice amount of 25,000 Euros: max. 41.65 Euro over a total invoice amount of 25,000 Euros: 1.8 o/oo USA by individual arrangement after the auction. #Raimonds Staprans #Figurative Painting #Latvia #Post-War Art #1990s #Post War. He studied art at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked with Hans Hofmann, among others. Staprans is known for his stylised depictions of landscapes, still lifes and architecture, characterised by vibrant geometric shapes and bold colours. His works combine elements of realism with a minimalist aesthetic and reflect both his cultural roots and the influences of the ‘Bay Area Figurative Movement’. Sunset II The work ‘Sunset II’ from 1989 is certainly one of the artist's most outstanding works. It depicts two boats lying quietly, almost statically, next to each other. The reduced geometric shapes of these boats are elevated to the point of abstraction and enhance the objective aesthetic, which the viewer can hardly escape. The minimalist composition divides the canvas into two horizontal areas of blue and orange. These colours, which are typical of the artist, contrast vividly with each other, creating a powerful, almost contemplative effect. Coarse, obvious brushstrokes in an expressive style add a dynamic texture to the work and give the depiction additional depth and power. The treatment of light and space The work is a testament to Stapran's intense study of light and space. Through the skilful use of lighting and the reflections on the water surface, he creates a sense of vibrancy and connection between the elements. The work is exemplary of Stapran's ability to transform simple motifs into complex emotional compositions through the use of colour and form. The motif invites the viewer to enter a meditative world and masterfully demonstrates the dialogue between nature and abstraction that characterises his entire work.
