Philippe Starck (born 18 January 1949) is a French industrial architect and designer known for his wide range of designs, including interior design, architecture, household objects, furniture, boats and other vehicles.



Starck was born on 18 January 1949 in Paris. He is the son of Andre Starck, who was an aeronautics engineer. He says that his father often inspired him because he was an engineer, who made invention a "duty". His family was originally from and lived in the Alsace region, before his grandfather moved to Paris. He studied at the École Camondo in Paris.

    Designed by Philippe Starck (French, b. 1949) for the Delano Miami Beach Hotel, this custom lamp and table combination was created as part of the hotel's 1995 redesign commissioned by hotelier Ian Schrager. Starck's redesign incorporated surrealist-inspired elements and a predominantly white interior scheme. The lamp and table combination features hand-blown opalescent white Murano glass components mounted on a polished chrome-plated metal structure. The glass includes a reticello lattice pattern on the lower trumpet-form element and conical shade, with an internal columnar stem decorated with vertical white glass canes. The lamp is integrated with a circular chrome-finished table surface at the midsection. A slender metal shaft extends from the table to a weighted circular base. Philippe Starck is a French industrial designer recognized worldwide for the functionality of his designs as much as for his aesthetics. He is a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France, and has won international awards such as the Interior Architecture Award or the Auszeichnung für hohe Designqualität, among others. Philippe Starck told Casa Vogue, "My concept of democratic design is based on the following idea: to give quality pieces at affordable prices to the greatest number of people. To lower the price and increase the quality. It's my political conscience." In 1969, Starck designed an inflatable structure, based on the idea of materiality, which reflected his initial interest in living spaces. Not long after, Pierre Cardin, seduced by iconoclastic design, offered him the position of artistic director at his publishing house. In 1970, Philippe Starck founded his first industrial design company, Starck Product, later renamed Ubik after Philip K. Dick's famous novel. Here he began working with the major design manufacturers in Italy, Driade, Alessi, Kartell, and others throughout Europe, Drimmer in Austria, Vitra in Switzerland and Disform in Spain, for example. In 1983, then French President François Mitterrand, on the recommendation of his Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, chose Starck to renovate the president's private apartments at the Élysée. The following year he designed the Café Costes. Over the years, Starck worked with top Italian furniture brands, including the creation of the iconic Generic chair for Kartell, the innovative Lady Hio table for Glass Italia and elegant sofas and armchairs for the likes of Cassina and Driade. Starck has won prestigious awards such as the "Oscar du luminaire" (1980), the Silver Delta Award (1986), the Platinum Circle (1987), the Grand Prix National de la Création Industrielle (1988), the Interior Architecture Award (1990), the Twelfth Annual Interiors Award (1991), the Good Design Award (1995, 2000), the Auszeichnung für hohe Designqualität (1998) and the German Ranking Design Award (2000), among others. In 1985, he was also made a knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters. It has the manufacturer's stamp on the base.

Measurements: 77 × 55 × 53 cm per chair Set of four chairs with a distinct postmodern aesthetic, constructed through an expressive combination of geometric surfaces and curved lines. The square seats, lacquered in red and perforated with small circular punctures, rest on straight legs. In contrast to the angular structure, the backrest and armrests are formed by black tubes that trace a sweeping, enveloping curve. The contrast between red and black gives the piece a graphic presence, almost like a drawing in space. The structural elements are openly displayed and form an essential part of the composition: every joint and curve serves as a visual element. The punctures in the seat visually lighten the piece and introduce a rhythm that softens the severity of its straight lines. Attributing the design to Philippe Starck is consistent with the bold design language he developed in the 1980s. Philippe Starck founded his own firm, Starck Product, in 1979 and collaborated with some of the leading international furniture manufacturers. His body of work spans architecture, interiors, furniture, and everyday objects, always driven by a quest for synthesis, innovation, and visual impact. His work is widely represented in institutional collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which holds numerous pieces by the designer, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where such significant designs as the Costes armchair and the Boom Rang chair are featured.
