    Offered is an original illustration painting by Modest Stein (American, 1871-1958), depicting a couple on a boat. Signed lower right. This illustration appears to be either cover art or interior art to "Love Story Magazine", September 7, 1935 (as per hand written notes on verso). Great image of a young red haired woman beaming at a blond haired man with an ocean backdrop. Apepars to be oil or pastel on board. Sight seen approx. 18" x 23". Illustration is currently housed in a frame under glass, however art is loose and will be removed from the frame for shipping. This lot is being offered on behalf of the New York County Public Administrator from the Estate of Elia (240114)

    Bearded Jew. Plaster Bust Sculpture. Signed and dated by the artist. 13 x 8 x 11cm. (New York), 1949 Modest Stein (1871–1958), born Modest Aronstam, was a Russian-born American-Jewish illustrator and close associate of the anarchists Alexander Berkman and Emma Goldman. He was Berkman's cousin and intended replacement in the attempted assassination in Pittsburgh in 1892 of the industrialist Henry Clay Frick. Later Stein abandoned active anarchism and became a successful illustrator for books and pulp magazines.
