Sold at Auction: Frank Stella

(1936-2007)
Painter

Biography

American-born abstract prints artist Frank Stella studied at Phillips Academy, Andover, and Princeton University for a degree in history. Stella was influenced by American artists Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline while at Princeton. After being introduced to the art world of New York, he produced The Marriage of Reason and Squalor (1959). This consisted of black parallel U-shapes painted in enamel alternating with thin lines of raw canvas.

In the 1960s, Frank Stella's abstract paintings gained recognition, and his Black Paintings series offered motivation for Minimalist artists. As a prints artist, Frank Stella didn't stand still because his constant experimentation led him to create complicated printmaking elements as well as architectural and freestanding structures such as Prinz Friedrich von Homburg, Ein Schauspiel, which stands outside the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
