        Est: €800 - €1,200

Stella, Jacques (1596-1657), nach. Hl.

1). Jacques Stella's career shows the fascination among European artists for Italy and its great artists from the early 17th century on. A son of the Flemish artist François Stella who had settled in Lyon, he set off for Rome to continue his education, stopping off first in Florence around 1619 where he met Jacques Callot, who was working for Cosimo de Medici. Stella settled in Rome between 1622 and 1623 and stayed over ten years, only leaving in 1634. The young artist could not have found a more exciting time than this period of the pontificate of Urban VIII when all the arts were the subject of new developments and studies, oscillating between late mannerism, classicism, Caravaggism and baroque inspiration. It was in the Rome of Borromini, of Bernini, but also the Rome of the Cavaliere d'Arpino and of Pietro da Cortona that Jacques Stella arrived. On the French side, Simon Vouet, Principe of the Accademia di San Luca, was unanimously popular, while in 1624, a certain still unknown Nicolas Poussin arrived. The two painters, who were friendly, shared the same taste for art inspired by antiquity and the great masters, favouring purity and restraint and with a preference for easel paintings destined for collectors as a support. The Holy Family shown here is an example of this production of small format works conceived for the personal devotion of their patrons. Stella illustrated this theme of the Virgin and Child or the Holy Family multiple times, in poses and situations that could be those of his contemporaries, sometimes in the intimacy of an interior, around a meal or, like here, outside, following an iconography that is closer to the Rest on the Flight into Egypt. The lamb and young St. John the Baptist are often present; St. Elizabeth is less common, but she is found in a composition now in the Musée des Augustins of Toulouse. Raphael's influence - Stella owned paintings and drawings by him - is visible, but a charming and informal dimension is added in our canvas where great tenderness emanates from the group formed by the Virgin, her cousin Elizabeth, their two children and the lamb, as well as in St. Joseph's benevolent paternal gaze. The Musée Boucher-de-Perthes in Abbeville has a print by de Poilly after Stella in which the group of the two women, the lamb and the children reappears in a horizontal composition (fig. 1). Estimation 60 000 - 90 000 €

JACQUES STELLA (LYON 1596 - PARIS 1657) Penitent Magdalene circa 1620 oil on marble 18 x 27 cm (7 x 10 1/2 in.) The present work can be related to various Marie Madeleine en prière on slate and marble dating from Stella's sojourn to Italy between 1622-34. His small scale paintings on semi-precious stones, a technique he learnt in Florence, were highly sought after by the collectors of the day . The present painting draws comparison with Judith and Holofernes, 30 x 36 cm, oil on slate, in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (Fig. 1). Stella developed a close relationship with the Borghese family while in Rome. (1) see S. Laveissière & I. Stella (Jacques, 1596-1657) - Offerta de Tributi e censi de paliotti di Seta, Vasi D'argento, e ceri ...

        Est: £2,000 - £3,000

etching, first state, an excellent impression, on laid paper, 455 x 610 mm., light central vertical fold, printer's crease upper right, minor cockling, surface dirt, with two small areas of rubbing to the lower left corner along the upper line of lettering, [Le Blanc, vol. III, no.6; Passavant 2,3; Robert-Dumesnil 7,11], circa 1621 The present etching portrays the annual procession and presentation of tributes to the grand duke of Tuscany, performed in Piazza della Signoria, Florence, on the feast-day of Saint John the Baptist, June 24, 1621. Robert-Dumesnil notes that their is included amongst the throng of paraders on foot and horsemen holding banners and tributes, a self-portait of the artist on the left, where he looks out at the viewer with a pen in his hand, while he is shaded from the heat of the day by a parasol held by an assistant.[1] Jacques Stella, son of the French Baroque painter and art dealer Francois Stella (1563-1605), is recorded as having worked in Florence between 1616 to 1622, where he undertook commissions for Cosimo II de' Medici. It was here that Stella would have met Jacques Callot, who was also working for Cosimo II, and whose own etchings appear to have influenced the present work. Stella later moved to Rome, around 1623, where he came into contact with Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), who was to become a close friend and have a great influence on Stella's later artistic output. We have found two other impressions of the work, one in the Getty Collection (Special Collections accn. no. P910002), and another at the Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, but have been unable to trace any copies at auction. [1] Robert-Dumesnil, A. Le peintre-graveur , t. 7, p. 161-162
