The plot is simple: “When a man (Fogel) comes into town to look for work and can find no room, his friend (Batalov) invites him to use the sofa in his apartment. Fogel has an affair with Batalov’s wife (Semyonova), but when Batalov finds out, he cannot leave the apartment for the same reason that Fogel began staying there: the housing shortage. Now it is Batalov who sleeps on the sofa. Batalov’s wife becomes pregnant, but neither man admits responsibility; they both encourage her to have an abortion. Ultimately, she leaves both of them to have the baby and take care of it herself” (Russian Films, p. 188). (Art Deco; Film)

    Est: $30,000 - $40,000

STENBERG BROTHERS (VLADIMIR, 1899-1982 & GEORGII, 1900-1933) [IN THE SPRING.] 1929. 40 1/2x27 3/4 inches, 102 3/4x70 1/2 cm. Condition B+: partially-replaced margins; repaired tears at edges, some into image; small replaced losses in margins; repaired tears, creases and restoration in image and along vertical and horizontal folds; small ink notation in top left corner. Mounted on paper. Matted and framed. In several of their film posters, including In the Spring, the Stenbergs 'mimicked the underlying diagonal structure of many Suprematist works' (Stenberg Brothers pp. 15-16), recalling works by artists such as Kandinsky and Malevich. The brothers were especially interested in the potential for new techniques using film projectors and invented their own "which was capable of not only enlarging and reducing, but also distorting the projected image (Stenberg Brothers p. 16). Their innovative manipulation of photography, combined with their Avant Garde sense of scale, geometry, and perspective made their posters stylistically unique. The Stenbergs' poster for Mikhail Kaufman's movie In the Spring mirrors not only the Constructivist sensibilities, but also the relationship between human and machine underlined in the film. Kaufman's brother (and biggest competition), Dziga Vertov, was the director of 'The Eleventh' (see Lot 32). Stenberg Brothers p. 55, Pack p. 263, Soviet Film p. 77, MoMA 134.2003. From the estate of Alexander Kaplen.

STENBERG BROTHERS (VLADIMIR, 1899-1982 & GEORGII, 1900-1933) [THE ELEVENTH.] 1928. 40 1/2x27 1/4 inches, 102 3/4x69 1/4 cm. Mospoligraf, Moscow. Condition B+: repaired tears, small replaced losses and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds. Matted and framed. "The Stenberg brothers produced a large body of work in a multiplicity of mediums, initially achieving renown as Constructivist sculptors and later working as successful theatrical designers, architects, and draftsmen; in addition, they completed design commissions that ranged from railway cars to women's shoes" (Stenberg Brothers p. II). Most notably, the Stenberg Brothers revolutionized the concept of the movie poster in the 1920s with their innate sense of design and a technique of their own devising, whereby photos from movies were projected onto canvases and traced in order to create photomontages. Having been given total artistic freedom within the early years of the new Soviet state, they were the first to abandon the standard promotional technique of realistically depicting movie scenes on posters. Film in Soviet Russia was viewed as an efficient and accessible mode of propaganda. This striking poster projects the word Odinnadstaty (The Eleventh), along the side of the poster and in both lenses of the man's glasses. The film documents the eleven years of progress since the October Revolution of 1917. Stenberg Brothers p. 45, Pack p. 125, Soviet Film p. 35, Avant Garde p. 70, The Poster 201, Mechanical Age pl. 54, Berman / Juan March p. 143, Clash of Ideologies p. 86, MoMA 135.2003. • Vladimir Stenberg "Colour-Construction"
    Dec. 10, 2019

    Vladimir Stenberg "Colour-Construction"

    Est: €7,000 - €10,000

Vladimir Stenberg (1899 – 1982) "Colour-Construction". Oil on canvas, signature in the bottom left corner "В.Стенберг". Vladimir Stenberg (1899 – 1982) – a prominent Soviet graphic artist and constructivist. In 1919 Vladimir Stenberg alongside with his brother Georgii Stenberg and their comrades founds the OBMOKhU (Society of Young Artists). In 1920 he joins the INKhUK (Institute of Artistic Culture) – a theoretical and research based artistic organisation, where in November 1920 he begins working in a newly formed "Constructivist Group" (Aleksei Gan, Karlis Johansons, Konstantin Medunetsky, Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova and brothers Stenberg). Members of this group experiment with composition and colours to achieve the transition “From image to construction”. In this period (1920-1921) brothers Stenberg and Konstantin Medunetsky begin their research by creating the “colour-constructions”: V.Stenberg “Colour-construction № 4” - The State Russian Museum, V.Stenberg “Colour-construction № 10” - The State Tretyakov Gallery, V.Stenberg “Colour-construction № 13”, G.Stenberg “Colour-construction” - The Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan, K.Medunetsky “Colour-construction” - The State Russian Museum, К.Medunetsky “Colour-construction № 7” - The Krasnodar Regional Art Museum named after F.Kovalenko. The brothers Stenberg’s and Konstantin Medunetsky’s “colour-constructions” were exhibited at the famous Second OBMOKhU Exhibition in May-June 1921. Medunetsky’s “Colour-construction № 7” can be seen on the photographs of the exhibition taken by Rodchenko. The key aspect of these experimental “colour-constructions” is the dynamic combination of a line with colour quasi-flat surfaces. Two presented paintings are very remarkable because they share the same subject with a different degree of abstraction. The shapes of workers on the first painting generate volume and give some context to the first painting, whereas the second painting without any contextual shapes is almost entirely flat and abstract. The difference between two paintings perfectly illustrates the constructivist idea of the transition “From image to construction”. Dimensions: 74 x 171 cm.

Inspired by the Socialist Realist novel "Cement" by Fyodor Gladkov (see the Sternberg Bros.' "Thirty Days," PAI-LXXVI, 77), directors Belyaev and Moskvin valorize Soviet builders in a crisis. They've got to save an uncompleted hydroelectric station from a glacier. Just when the crisis appears to be over, an engineer, bedridden in hospital, is studying the plant's blueprints and finds a catastrophic fault in Turbine No. 3. Pat & Patachon / The Policemen. 1928.

    Est: $2,500 - $3,000

Artist: STENBERG BROTHERS (Vladimir, 1899-1982; Georgi, 1900-1933) Size: 24 1/2 x 36 5/8 in./62.3 x 93 cm Pat & Patachon were a Danish comedy duo of the silent movie era, not unlike Abbott & Costello. Pat went by the nickname "lighthouse," with Patachon the "trailer" or "sidecar." This poster is for the Russian release of their 1925 film "Police" or "The Policemen." Susan Pack, in Film Posters of the Russian Avant-Garde, notes that only Patachon is pictured here, "however the comedy duo was so well known by this time that the designers may have thought it unnecessary to show both." This is one of two posters designed by the Stenberg Brothers for the film; see PAI-LXXII, 84 for a companion image. (Film)

It's apparently a consolidated advertisement for the journal and its associated publications: 24 volumes of De Maupassant's short stories, translated; 8 books from their library of modern writers: a "Who's Who" of both Proletariat and Dissident writers of the 1920s (Volnov, Gladkov, Kataev, Libedinsky, Novikov-Priboy, and Olesha); the "Poetry of Nowadays," plus 4 films written by Neverov. It was 14 rubles for a year's subscription, and we wish we could order it now. (Soviet; Literary)

Artist: STENBERG BROTHERS (Vladimir, 1899-1982; Georgi, 1900-1933) Size: 24 1/8 x 37 in./61.2 x 94 cm It's so startling and magical to see a Russian Constructivist / Art Deco interpretation of the Moulin-Rouge, if one is conditioned to see the venue through the eyes of Toulouse-Lautrec and Chéret. Here, the Stenberg Brothers are promoting a 1928 British silent (though musical) film starring the Russian Olga Tschechowa, as well as Eve Gray and Jean Bradin. In addition to the smoldering image of Tschechowa, we're treated to a photomontage of Paris's Cafe de la Paix. (Art Deco; Soviet)

Here, we can see the neon lights of Latin Quarter cafés and cabarets that tempt Marie into an affair with the wealthy Pierre, leaving behind her adored Jean. . . and inspiring a fraught love triangle that leads to dark times in the City of Light. Turbine No. 3. 1927.

    Est: $6,000 - $7,000

Artist: STENBERG BROTHERS (Vladimir, 1899-1982; Georgi, 1900-1933) & YAKOV RUKLEVSKY Size: 28 3/8 x 42 1/4 in./72 x 107.2 cm The Stenberg Brothers' riveting Constructivist photomontage illustrates "Turbine No. 3," a film within the classic Soviet trope of industrial drama. Inspired by the Socialist Realist novel Cement by Fyodor Gladkov (see the Sternberg Bros.' "Thirty Days", No. 85), directors Belyaev and Moskvin valorize Soviet builders in a crisis. They've got to save an uncompleted hydroelectric station from a glacier. Just when the crisis appears to be over, an engineer, bedridden in hospital, is studying the plant's blueprints and finds a catastrophic fault in Turbine No. 3. He leaps from his sickbed and rushes to the industrial site to prevent a terrible tragedy. Inset photos include shots of workers donning protective gear, the long march out to the site, and a sailor kissing his beloved goodbye. (Soviet)

STENBERG, VLADIMIR (RUSSIAN 1899-1982), Long Live Party Leaders Lenin and Stalin, 1937, color lithograph, 90 x 137 cm (35 1/2 x 54 in). PROVENANCE INFORMATION The current lot comes from the collection of the esteemed collector and art critic Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. Kholodkov acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout the decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 exhibition Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American istitutions. His unique selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
