The bank was named for an old New York rifle range on Long Island; by placing a coin on the top of the rifle and pushing the figure's right foot down, the coin is shot into a bulls-eye target on the tree and strikes a bell. Original paint, scattered losses, strong pigment, mechanically fine; retains trap and bell within trunk. The rivet under shooters left foot is a tad loose, grandpa added a bead of solder. Property of Arthur Liman, Rye, New York, waterfront estate, Renowned collector of American folk art. Many pieces were gifted to NYC museums and displayed in special exhibitions. Arthur Liman was also well known for his role as a lead prosecuting attorney in the Richard Nixon watergate trials. This auction will feature additional pieces from his collection.               3 shares à 100 $ 19.4.1834, #261 Eine der ersten Eisenbahngesellschaften des Landes, im Februar 1830 als Doppelunternehmen ins Leben gerufen. 1832 erhielt sie das Transportmonopol im Bundesstaat New Jersey. Bis 1868 besaß sie das lukrative Monopol für die Bahnverbindung zwischen New York und Pennsylvania. Ihren Erfolg verdankt die Gesellschaft der Familie Stevens. Robert L. Stevens (1787-1856), erster Präsident der Gesellschaft, Maschinenbauingenieur und Konstrukteur von über 20 Dampfschiffen, bestellte bei Stephenson in England, dem Erfinder der Dampflokomotive, eine Lokomotive, die unter dem Namen “John Bull” bekannt geworden ist (erste funktionstüchtige Dampflokomotive des Kontinents!). Sie wurde am 12.11.1831 in Betrieb genommen und erhielt die Nr. 1 bei Camden & Amboy. Edwin Augustus Stevens (1795-1868), Bruder von Robert L. Stevens, Ingenieur und Financier, gilt als der eigentliche Gründer der Camden & Amboy RR. Er leitete die Gesellschaft erfolgreich bis zu seinem Tode. Edwin A. Stevens hatte sich auch einen Namen als Konstrukteur von Panzerschiffen gemacht. Bereits 1814 baute er ein gepanzertes Kriegsschiff, welches jedoch von den Militärs nicht gewürdigt wurde. Sein Name lebt weiter in dem von ihm gestifteten “Stevens Institute of Technology” in Hoboken. Die Idee eines Kanals zwischen den Raritan und Delaware Rivers, der den Weg von Philadelphia nach New York um 100 Meilen abkürzen würde, wurde bereits in den 1690er Jahren von William Penn, dem Gründer des Staates Pennsylvania, entwickelt. Die 1816 in New Jersey eingesetzte Kanalbaukommission plädierte dann für die Trasse von Edison über Princeton nach Trenton, doch lokale Widerstände (vor allem von Mühlenbesitzern an den anzuzapfenden Wasserläufen) verhinderten das Projekt fast eineinhalb Jahrzehnte lang. Erst am 4.2.1830 verabschiedete das Parlament von New Jersey die Charter der Zwillingsgesellschaften Delaware & Raritan Canal Co. und Camden & Amboy Rail Road and Transportation Co. Der Kanalbau kam aber wegen mangelnder Aktienzeichnungen nicht in Gang, und erst als Robert F. Stockton das gesamte Familienvermögen riskierte, begann der Kanalbau und wurde bis 1834 vor allem durch irische Einwanderer vollendet. Seine Blüte hatte der Kanal bis in die 1870er Jahre durch den Transport von Kohle aus den Kohlefeldern Pennsylvanias nach New York. Erst 1932 wurde er stillgelegt. 1872 fusionierte die Kanalgesellschaft mit mehreren parallel laufenden Eisenbahnen zur United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Co., welche dann an die Pennsylvania RR verpachtet wurde. Mit Originalunterschrift Robert L. Stevens (President der Rail Road Company), ausgestellt auf Thomas Biddle (der bei Ausgabe der Aktie schon fast drei Jahre tot war!). Thomas Biddle (1790-1831), geboren als eines von 10 Kindern der einflussreichen Biddle-Familie in Philadelpia, wurde im Unabhängigkeitskrieg 1812 zum Kriegshelden. 1823 heiratete er Ann Mullanphy, die Tochter des ersten Millionärs des Staates Missouri (John Mullanphy) und übersiedelte nach St. Louis, wo er Direktor der dortigen Filiale der Bank of the United States wurde. Am 21.8.1831 starb er, gerade 40-jährig, in einem Duell mit dem mit ihm verfeindeten Kongreßabgeordneten Pettis.
