        Will Henry Stevens (1881 - 1949) American

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Will Henry Stevens (1881 - 1949) Watercolor and gouache on paper, signed lower left "Stevens", measures 11 x 16.5 inches and 23.5 x 29 inches w/frame. During his career, Stevens captured the spirit of the Southern landscape from the highlands of Appalachia to the lowlands and deltas of Louisiana. His faithful commune with nature began in early boyhood and lasted his entire life, providing the inspiration for thousands of exquisite paintings. Proficient in a variety of media, Stevens poetic vision is reflected in oil, tempera, watercolor and pastels that he crafted by hand. His quiet intelligence, keen vision, modernist disposition and technical mastery are seen throughout his body of work. Stevens drew and painted simultaneously in two styles -- one abstract, influenced by Klee and Kandinsky, and the other a lyrical body of work that is more traditional. He was a pioneer of modernism in the American South, and his representational work and objective abstractions reflect his deep love of nature, particularly the bayou and mountains.

        Jul. 08, 2023

Will Henry Stevens Pastel Landscape Painting, Hay Barn

        Est: $1,400 - $1,800

Will Henry Stevens (Indiana/Louisiana/N.C/Tennessee, 1881-1949), "Hay Barn," pastel on paper landscape painting depicting a man raking hay from a horse-drawn wagon into a central barn set in the middle of a field, while gray clouds threaten overhead. A bare tree stands in the foreground. Signed "Stevens" lower left. Matted and framed under glass in an ebonized frame with a gilt sight edge. Sight - 16" x 13". Frame - 24" x 21". Biography (from the Johnson Collection): "An abiding love of nature - especially as borne out in the Southern landscape - informed the life and work of painter, poet and teacher Will Henry Stevens. Born in Vevay, Indiana, Stevens enrolled at the Cincinnati Art Academy in 1901 where his teachers included Frank Duveneck and Lewis Henry Meakin. In 1904, he won a design competition sponsored by Cincinnati's famous Rookwood Pottery and was subsequently hired as a tile designer. Two years later, Stevens undertook studies at the Art Students League in New York with William Merritt Chase and developed associations with Van Dearing Perrine and Jonas Lie in the city. His first one-man show was held at the New Gallery in 1907. Over the course of his career, Stevens' expansive intellectual curiosity and interest in experimental art forms led him to work in varied media and innovative styles, producing both realist and abstract expressions. In 1921, Stevens became a member of the faculty at Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, teaching there until his retirement in 1948. He plumbed the lush Louisiana landscape for subject matter during the school year, while the summers were reserved for travels to the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. Stevens was a popular teacher at several art colonies in the South, including Black Mountain, North Carolina. Throughout his career, he maintained friendships with Robert Henri, George Bellows, and other artists, and closely followed the modernist scene in New York. His work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Morris Museum of Art, and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston."

        Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Will Henry Stevens (American/Louisiana, 1881-1949), "Flight", 1945, oil on board, signed and dated lower right, signed and illegibly inscribed en verso, "Robert M. Hicklin, Jr." and 2 "The Charleston Renaissance Gallery" labels with artist, title and date on backing board, handwritten label with artist and inscribed "#045 - Hicklin" on reverse of frame, 25 7/8 in. x 30 in., framed, overall 35 1/2 in. x 39 3/4 in. x 1 3/8 in. Provenance: The Charleston Renaissance Gallery, Charleston, SC. Note: Will Henry Stevens was a pioneer of Modernism in the South who worked simultaneously in both abstract and representational styles. Stevens came to New Orleans in 1921 to teach at Newcomb College, a position he held until the year prior to his death. Stevens became part of the active and exciting art circle centered around the French Quarter. Prior to and during his tenure in New Orleans, he also worked in and visited New York, where he was exposed to current international developments in artistic styles. During a trip to New York in the 1930s, Stevens was greatly influenced by many art forms, including Sung Dynasty paintings, Taoism, the poetry of Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman, and modernist painters such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Both artists had a strong influence on Stevens’ aesthetic. “Flight” from 1945 offered here is a paradigmatic example of the artist’s talent. The magnitude and depth of the dynamic composition, penetrating color palette and large scale combine to create a rare masterwork in the artist’s oeuvre. Stevens’ mature abstract works are his most sought-after, and one of this caliber is rarely seen at auction. Ref.: Gruber, Richard J. "Will Henry Stevens." 64 Parishes. www.64parishes.org.
