Original wrappers printed in blue and red, date on upper wrapper altered from 1885 to 1886 in pen, as often (spine significantly worn with losses resulting in front wrap partially detached, contemporary review pasted to inner front wrap); folding chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Dr. Frederick Arnold Lees (1847-1921), English botanist (ownership stamp on front cover). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with date on front cover hand-altered as called for. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was, according to Stevenson's stepson Lloyd Osbourne, written in a frenzy of inspiration. Upon reading his wife's criticisms that the story he wrote was more of an allegory than a story, Stevenson burned the first draft, thus forcing him to start from scratch. The story was rewritten in less than a week. The printed date on the upper cover is 1885, with the intended date of publication December of that year, "but when it was ready the bookstalls were already full of Christmas numbers, etc, and the trade would not look at it..." (the publisher Charles Longman, quoted by Prideaux, p.44). Publication was therefore delayed until January 1886, with the American Scribner edition coming out a few days later. Many of the covers were altered by hand to 1886, as with the present copy. There is some controversy around publication of the first edition, as Scribner's published the American edition four days before Longman's issued their own in both cloth and wraps; the wrappers issue precedes the cloth. Half-title; map frontispiece printed in 3 colors; 4pp. publisher's ads at end. (Occasional spotting, some toning.) Original sage-green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, black coated endpapers (recased, endpapers renewed). Provenance: The Daily Chronicle (institutional stamp). FIRST EDITION in book form, one of 250 copies printed on 24 November 1883 (Beinecke/McKay, 240) with the following issue points: "dead man's chest" not capitalized on pp. 2 and 7; the "7" is stamped in on the pagination of p. 127; the full-stop is dropped from line 20 of p. 178, and 4pp. of publisher's ads at rear bearing printer's date 1083. Treasure Island was begun in the summer of 1881 at Stevenson's summer home at Castleton of Braemar while trying to keep his twelve year-old stepson amused during a rainy afternoon indoors, and was completed the following winter. In the interim period Stevenson read some completed chapters to his friend and publisher Dr. Alexander Japp, who negotiated their publication in Young Folks magazine under the title The Sea Cook while Stevenson worked to complete the story, at which time it was retitled Treasure Island and published in book form by Cassell & Company. It was Stevenson's first great critical and commercial success and has been the source of numerous radio, television, and film adaptations. Beinecke/McKay 240; Osborne 2:1030; Prideaux 11. We have been unable to identify the recipient - Bertha Baker owned the lodging house where Stevenson stayed when he came to Saranac Lake, New York but that was not until 1887; Bertha and Fred Goudy ran the Village Press which printed books including poems by Stevenson, but again at a later date to the inscription.

Stevenson, Robert Louis Glass plate negative taken in Samoa Showing Robert Louis Stevenson and Tuimaleali'ifano Fa'aoloi'i Si'ua'ana I, paramount chief of Samoa, 21.5 x 16cm, with some writing to the negative and three labels around the margins one reading “Stevenson copy Samoa 17/6/95: 229” This image can be found in Vailima Letters by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in 1895, opposite p.320.The text on the negative: Stevenson copy Samoa 17/6/95: 229, suggests that this copy of the image was created seven months after Robert Louis Stevenson's death. It has been suggested that this negative belonged to the New Zealand-born photographer in Apia, Alfred John Tattersall, whom the photographer John Davis took on as an assistant in 1886. The number 229 seems to have been Tattersall's stock number. In April 1895 a large fire destroyed Davis' photographic Gallery and all of Davis' negatives were destroyed. However, for this copy to have been created, the negative must have been stored elsewhere and is therefore one of the few pieces from the Davis collection to have survived.Extensive research suggests that this is the only negative in existence of this image of Robert Louis Stevenson with Chief Tuimaleali'ifano Fa'aoloi'i Si'ua'ana. Notably, it is the last known photograph taken of Robert Louis Stevenson prior to his death. It would therefore make sense that any copies he had stored elsewhere would then become the only negative in existence after the fire destroyed the original negative(s).

An extraordinary A.L.S., Robert Louis Stevenson, four pages, 8vo, n.p. (Edinburgh), n.d. (Autumn 1873), to his cousin Robert Alan Mowbray Stevenson ('My dear Bob'), on Stevenson's monogrammed stationery. The twenty-three year old Stevenson writes with a certain amount of humour in his letter, although signs of a personal crisis (both financial and mental) pervade through the content, in part, 'I have written to no one for about a month. I can't come to Paris just now, owing to my being so bloody uncoiny......I had to sponge on fellows for tobacco. Wasn't that death for a rising literary gent? I have not been able to write either; just such hell, in spirits, health &c. This drunken city exerts its strange prerogative; and I do something sacrifice to the God of the coloured bottles. However I am going to be good (I have not been very bad, you know, only I don't like the game at all); and in the meantime I've got enough coin scraped together to go to London for three days (where I shall see Katharine [Bob's sister]) and then land myself in the character of a mendicant at Cambridge where I shall be fed and clothed for a week at Trin[ity] Coll[ege]....As for Paris, I suppose it will be Spring before I can manage that; but then I shall come for some time and make a good holiday of it. I shall take this letter out with me and part with it when I have found out the date for Academy pictures......I say, old man, Edinburgh is a very sanguinary shop, and bloodier than ever, you should be glad you are out of it'. Beneath his signature Stevenson playfully observes 'Writing as large as this is such damned fun - I can't stop though I have nothing to say' and further adds a postscript, signed with his initials RLS, which fills the entire fourth page, in part, 'I am trying stories and all sorts of things, with no success. I am an incompetent bugger, I shall write soon, when I am in a holier, happier, better state of mind and body.......I am damned miserable now sometimes, and have a struggle to keep from liquor and opium and things of that sort. I wish to God you were here. I am going south tomorrow so the worst is over; the change will put me up again......' A rare letter of exceptional content. Some very light age wear and a few minor stains to the edges, otherwise VG Robert Alan Mowbray Stevenson (1847-1900) Scottish art critic, a cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson. After studying at the Edinburgh School of Art Stevenson moved to Paris in 1873 where he continued his studies under Carolus Duran. Katharine de Mattos (1851-1939) Scottish author and journalist, sister of Robert Alan Mowbray Stevenson and a cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson. Robert Louis Stevenson and his cousin Bob enjoyed a close friendship, leading Bohemian lifestyles in Edinburgh and becoming members of the LJR (Liberty, Justice, Reverenvce) Club whose constitution began with the statement 'Disregard everything our parents have taught us'. Stevenson would visit his cousin in Paris in April 1874.

STEVENSON ROBERT LOUIS: (1850-1894) Scottish novelist of Treasure Island (1883), Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) and Kidnapped (1886). A.L.S., Robert Louis Stevenson, two pages, small 8vo, Wensleydale, Bournemouth, n.d. (c. October 1884), to Walter Scott, evidently a bookseller. Stevenson requests several works from his correspondent, '1. Wellington's Despatches: if possible the 15/- copy. 2. Sidney Castle. 5 vols. 3. The Delicate Distress….the Gordian Knot. 4 vols., and Colquhoun on the Police', which he states totals 25/- and for which he encloses an order (no longer present) and further remarking 'The carriage and the other half crown should the first copy of the Despatches be gone, you will kindly let me hear about'. A letter of interesting content for its list of reading matter that Stevenson sought during his time in Bournemouth (July 1884 - August 1887), a period which marked the publication of some of his most famous works. D.S., with his initials R.L.S., in pencil, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Apia, Samoa), n.d. (May 1891?). The partially printed manuscript document, completed in ink, is an invoice prepared for Stevenson by P. H. Krause, a butcher, for a leg of mutton, veal etc., totalling $7.62. Stevenson has approved the invoice, giving his instruction 'Please pay' and signing his initials beneath. The instruction and signature are lightly struck through in pencil, as indication that the transaction was completed, and the invoice is also marked as 'Paid' and signed by Krause. Some light overall age wear and minor staining, a few small holes, mainly to the upper part of the document, only very slightly affecting a few words and the date, and with one neat split to the right edge, G

STEVENSON ROBERT LOUIS: (1850-1894) Scottish Novelist of Treasure Island, Kidnapped and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A.L.S., Robert Louis Stevenson, two pages, small 8vo, n.p. (Paris), 19th January 1877, to Walter L. Palmer. Stevenson writes an intriguing letter seeking a private meeting with Palmer and states, in full, 'I shall be obliged to you for an early interview. I have called on you already this morning; I shall call again after four this afternoon; and should I be again unfortunate, I should be glad to hear from you when you will be in the house, or where else I can conveniently speak with you alone. I am, Sir, your obedient servant'. Some light staining and wear to the folds (professionally and neatly repaired) only very slightly affecting a few words of text, but not the signature. G Stevenson's correspondent is most likely to have been Walter Launt Palmer (1854-1932) American Impressionist Painter. Palmer was in Paris in 1876-77 where he was studying with Carolus-Duran and encountered the artist colony of Grez-sur-Loing with Stevenson. The Scottish novelist was in Paris in early 1877 with his future wife, Fanny Osbourne, and spent much of the following year in the company of his lover and her two children.
