STIEGLITZ, ALFRED (1864–1946) [The Steerage, 1907]. Large-format photogravure on Japanese tissue, image 10 1/2 x 13 1/8 inches (264 x 330 mm), sheet size 15 7/8 x 11 inches, as printed in 1915 for insertion into a deluxe example of issue 7-8 of the magazine 291, published September-October 1915. Framed. Stieglitz's classic image was the only photogravure to appear in 291 during its brief period of publication. It had earlier appeared as a photogravure in Camera Work 36, 1911, in a smaller 7 1/2 x 6 inch format. A defining image in the history of photography, it was first praised by the painter Max Weber in 1910, who was struck by its strong geometry and modernist sensibility, which was a departure from Stieglitz's early work with its pictorialist aesthetic. Stieglitz (a ruthless editor of his oeuvre at the best of times) destroyed a quantity of the unsold issues of the magazine after publication had ended, and this large-format photogravure is by no means common, especially in the far more limited issue on Japanese tissue.
