        • 20th C. Pacific Northwest Wood Totem - Randy Stiglitz
          Jan. 18, 2018

20th C. Pacific Northwest Wood Totem - Randy Stiglitz

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Pacific Northwest, British Colombia, Canada, Squamish, Randy Stiglitz (Cree, Coast Salish, b. 1956), ca. late 20th century CE. An extraordinary carved wood totem depicting an Orca / Killer Whale holding a human with a painted and incised - perhaps masked - visage and animal fur (most likely sea otter fur) for hair in his grasp. A brilliant composition with fine carving technique and a vibrant color palette of red, green, and black. The Killer Whale was known as the "Lord of the Ocean" who held seals as slaves and dolphins as warriors. The indigenous believe that Killer Whales are related to humankind, and according to legend, when a human being drowns, this human is taken down into the depths of the ocean and transformed into a Killer Whale. In fact, some peoples believe that Killer Whales will intentionally take down entire canoes to get closer to their loved ones. Some also believe that these Orcas are actually reincarnations of former chiefs who were lost at sea. Size: 4.75" W x 18.5" H (12.1 cm x 47 cm) This piece was created by Randy Stiglitz who began carving totems and masks in the early 1970s on the Capilano Reserve in North Vancouver. A few years later he moved to Victoria, British Colombia to learn the Kwakwaka'wakw and Coast Salish styles of wood carving from sculptors of Thunderbird Park. He studied with Gene Brabant and John Livingston at the Hunt family studio. Due to his diverse background and the influences of several cultural styles, Stiglitz's carvings are notable for their extensive details and sophisticated technique rather than a culturally specific style. His work was included in the "Sharing Myths" exhibition at Ohio's Sandusky Cultural Center in 2007. Provenance: ex-Los Angeles, California, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #128562
