In addition to portraits, he photographed numerous genre scenes and landscapes that he often colored by hand. At that time, his genre scenes from foreign countries were popular souvenirs on the European market. In 1883, von Stillfried und Rathenitz returned to Vienna, where he worked as a photographer to the court and as a painter.
