The Artist Shannon Stirnweis

Born in Portland Oregon in 1931, his ambitions fixed on becoming an artist while in grade school. This interest, although sometimes detoured by sports and studies, continued through high school and a year at the University of Oregon. Winning the American Institute of Graphic Design Scholarship. He completed his education with five years at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.

After graduation he served two years in the army as an illustrator in Germany. In his spare time he was able to paint more than thirty portraits of the officers and men which paid for a camera which allowed him to place third in an all army photography show. Most of his leave time was spent at European museums in a rare opportunity to study the works of the masters.

Discharged in the late fifties,he found making a living painting for the galleries was difficult, but the illustration market in the East was still quite healthy. In New York City he progressed from an agency sketch job to free lancing adventure pulps and children's books to slick magazines such as Argosy, Boy's Life,Time,Show,Outdoor Life and Field and Stream. He did covers for virtually all the New York paperback publishers and illustrated over thirty children's books. His advertising clients varied from pharmaceuticals,to industrials to movies to stamps.

After serving two years as President of the Society of Illustrators in New York City he followed the lead of many former illustrators and entered the field of gallery painting.

He and his wife Regina were married in 1958.They have three sons,Kevin,Kirk and Eric all are into the arts,Kirk is painting the historical West in New Hampshire.

He is represented in the permanent collections of the U.S. Dept.of the Interior, U.S. Air Force, U.S.Army Historical Museum. U.S.Coast Guard, Leaning Tree, Marriott, Grumbacher, Rumley, C.B.S., Burt Reynolds, California Federal Savings, University of Texas(El Paso), University of Wyoming, New Britain Museum and the Pipin Museum. ARTIST: Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire, Oregon, 1931 - 2019) NAME: Fort William YEAR: 1983 MEDIUM: acrylic on board CONDITION: Excellent. No visible inpaint under UV light. SIGHT SIZE: 20 x 18 inches / 50 x 45 cm BOARD SIZE: 23 x 20 inches / 58 x 50 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Fort William stamp issue June 30, 1983. As early trappers and traders began to realize the natural bounty the New World had to offer them, they built fur trading posts and trading centers on the frontier. Many of these were located along the seacoast, rivers and lakes so that the trappers and traders could use the waterways to transport their wares. One such trading center was Fort William, located at Thunder Bay, an inlet on Lake Superior. The first white settlement at the site of Fort William was probably Dulhut's fur-trading post built in 1678. However, a more substantial French fort, Kaministikwia, was erected in 1717 and later abandoned after the Seven Years' War. After the war, Montreal traders used the Grand Portage-Pigeon River route south of Fort William to transport their wares. However, when the American border was set along the Pigeon River, the British traders rediscovered the French route to the west. Between 1801 and 1805, the English built a fort on Thunder Bay, naming it Fort William after William McGillivray, principal director of the North West Company. Fort William soon became the inland headquarters of the North West Company and served as a major trading depot for trading expeditions into the West. From 1802 until 1821, when the North West Company merged with the Hudson Bay Company, and the Nor'Westers, as the traders were called, met annually at Fort William. After 1821, the main trade route for the merged company was switched to Hudson Bay and Fort William became an obscure post. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Fort #1 - Point Levis" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Fort Number One stamp issued June 30, 1983. In the 1860s, as tensions grew in Europe, it looked for a time like England would be cut off from her lumber supplies from the Scandinavian countries. This possibility made the great wooded wilderness of Canada an important natural resource to the Mother Country. Meanwhile, on the North American continent, the American Civil War had been raging since 1861. Since England had supported the South in the Civil War, Canadians feared that the north would take revenge on Canada following early defeats in the War. Thus, to safeguard the southern border and protect the vital timber supplies, Britain constructed three forts on the heights above the south shore of the St. Lawrence across from Quebec City. These three forts --- known as Fort Number One, Fort Number Two, and Fort Number Three at Point Levis -- were never given specific names, even though they were each located at a definite site. Fort Number One was erected at Mount Pleasant. Fort Number Two was constructed at Spruce Cliff and Fort Number Three was built at a place called Lemure. Of the three forts, only Fort Number One still stands. Furthermore, none of the forts ever housed a garrison or received armaments ... for in 1871, the British government signed the Treaty of Washington ending the quarrel between the United States and England. Later, during World War I, Fort Number One sheltered both soldiers and munitions en route to the theater of operations in Europe. Image Size: 19.75 x 17.5 in. Overall Size: 22.75 x 20 in. Unframed. Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire Oregon, B. 1931) "Alaska Brown Bear" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Alaska Brown Bear issued on June 13, 1987. Although several species of Brown Bears are native to a number of regions around the world, the largest of these - and indeed the world's largest living terrestrial carnivore - is the Alaska Brown Bear. Also known as the Kodiak Bear, these Bears may reach nine feet in length and weigh more than three-quarters of a ton. Preferring a solitary life, when spring arrives, these huge Bears shuffle along well-worn trails to salmon-rich streams where they feed after the winter's hibernation. Frequently, the Bears will quarrel over territorial fishing rights. After disputes are settled, they get down to the business of catching fish. Fishing techniques differ between individuals. Some Bears wade out among the fish and squat down so that the currenct boils over them, and when a fish passes by, an effortless head nod or paw swipe yields a meal. Others wait by the banks for fish darting close to shore so a powerful brown paw can pin it down. Still other Bears refuse to fish at all, preferring to sneak off with an unwary neighbor's catch. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B10955)

Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Fort Coteau-du-Lac stamp issued June 30, 1983. As the vast Canadian frontier was gradually explored and settled, fortresses sprang up in the New World, both to accommodate trappers and settlers who worked in the wilderness and to give military protection to trading operations. One fort built to protect vital trade operations in Canada is Fort Coteau-du-Lac. It is situated at the junction of the Eelisle and St. Lawrence Rivers and it protected essential supplies stored in the vicinity. In addition, the fortress guarded the first canal built on the St. Lawrence River ... a canal which was vital to the transport of supplies. Later, during the War of 1812, the British military erected elaborate fortifications to protect the strategically important waterway and storage depot which stood at the juncture of the two rivers. However, once the war was over, Fort Coteau-du-Lac became a center for civilian trade and was renovated in 1824-26. Today, this historic military and trading fort is a well-known National Historic Park in Canada which features an impressive interpretive display in its reconstructed octagonal blockhouse. Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire Oregon, B. 1931) "Ft. Chambly" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was oiginally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Fort Chambly stamp issued June 30, 1983. Canada's early history is in many ways the story of a small population struggling to carve a nation from a vast, unsettled wilderness. In those days, command of Canada's waterways often meant control of a territory. For this reason, nations vying for power over a territory would build forts along the rivers to protect their interests. Fort Chambly is one such fort. Built by the French along the left bank of the Richelieu River, Fort Chambly guarded French interests in the southern frontier. Construction on the fort began in 1665 by Jacques de Chambly, captain of a company in the Carignan Regiment, and the structure was first called Fort St. Louis. Originally the fort was a staked enclosure with a warehouse, barracks and a chapel. But, in 1709, after the Quebec military authorities ordered the fort's abandonment, the citizens of nearby Montreal protested and set out to rebuild the historic fort in stone. In 1711, the fort was finished and christened, Pontchartrain. But, despite the name change, people continued to call it Fort Chambly. In 1760, the fort was captured by the British, who manned the fort with a small garrison. Fifteen years later, in 1775, American forces easily overcame the British soldiers stationed at the fort. But the Americans abandoned the fortress only a year later. During the War of 1812, the fort served as an operational base on the Canadian side of Lake Champlain. In 1851, the fort was abandoned and ceded to Canada by the government of Great Britain. Image Size: 19.25 x 16.5 in. Overall Size: 23 x 20 in. Unframed. (B08160)

Germany's defeat at Kursk in July 1943 marked its last mass effort along the Eastern Front. Hitler, concerned about the Allied landings at Sicily, transferred several of his best divisions to the West. German forces in the East, now hopelessly outnumbered in both men and materiel, had little choice but to fall back. The next two months would see the Germans retreat some 150 miles along a more than 600-mile front, extending from the Donets River in the south, through Kharkov, to the Divina River north of Smolensk. On September 25, facing a rapidly-approaching Red Army, the Germans abandoned Smolensk. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Unframed. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Ladybug issued on June 13, 1987. A member of the beetle family Coccinellidae, these insects are, for the most part, extremely beneficial to man. Popular legend says that Ladybugs were so named in the Middle Ages to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus. Ladbugs have flourished wherever they are found. There are thousand of species of Ladbugs throughout the world - including dozens in the United States. Each species has its own distinctive arrangement of spots, ranging from two to twenty-two. Normally red or yellow with black spots, Ladybugs may be black, with red or yellow spot patterns. Although brightly colored, the Ladybug's coloration is actually its protection. The bright orange deters predators and reminds them of the Ladybug's bitter taste. Although the Ladybug need not fear many predators, it is itself a formidable predator. The Ladybug is a favorite of farmers and gardeners since, as an adult and as a larva, it consumes vast quantities of destructive pests. The adult Ladybugs seek out plants infested with aphids on which to lay their eggs. Image Size: 13.25 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B11089)
