Artist John Stobart is a maritime painter who began his career by creating oils on canvas of vessels belonging to shipping firms. His true love, however, was the pre-industrial sailing ships, and he shifted to painting historical maritime scenes and ships in harbor, finding an admiring audience particularly in New England. John Stobart's paintings for sale also include plein-air seascapes of maritime villages and towns.
As an artist, John Stobart has a meticulous eye for detail, from chopping waves to harbor pools to sail rigging and rocky coastal inlets. His sense of tonality, light and shadowing, and surface reflection convey the drama and reality of bustling wharf sides, ships in tumultuous seas, and peaceful quaysides at dusk. John Stobart's prints include his historical maritime scenes, harbor sights, and coastal village seascapes. You can find other picturesque seascape prints for sale at Invaluable.
