DENNIS STOCK (1928–2010) | James Dean at the farm of his uncle, Fairmount 1955 | Vintage silver print, double-weight semi-matte Agfa paper, in very good condition (minor signs of wear) 29,6 x 20,5 cm Photographer’s agency stamp and negative no. stamp “56-7-15/25” and annotations in pencil on the reverse LITERATURE “Moody New Star”, in: LIFE magazine, March 7, 1955, p. 125f. James Dean had grown up in his uncle’s family in peasant Fairmount. The picture was taken in February 1955, when Dennis Stock accompanied the 24-year-old film star to New York and to the place of his childhood, commissioned by the Life magazine. Before that, Dean had finished filming “East of Eden”, which was the basis for his meteoric fame and his image as an impetuous, melancholic rebel. The original negative number stamp refers to a wrong year of origin, inasmuch as Dean had a fatal accident in September 1955. Since this error can be found in all prints of this series distributed by Magnum, it is considered proof of authenticity.

Vintage silver print 29,8 x 20,6 cm Photographer's agency stamp and neg. no. stamp on the reverse LITERATURE Dennis Stock - Made in USA. Photographs 1951-1971, Ostfildern 1995, p. 69; Hans-Michael Koetzle (ed.), Photo-Icons. Die Geschichte hinter den Bildern. 1827-1991, Köln 1996, p. 232-241; Claudia Springer (ed.), James Dean Transfigured: The Many Faces of Rebel Iconography, Austin 2007, p. 188. For his Life magazine story on the 'moody new star' James Dean (1931–1955), Dennis Stock accompanied the movie star to his childhood home. The trip with the photographer was to be Dean's last home visit, as in September of the same year he had a fatal accident with his Porsche Speedster. Rural Fairmount, where Dean grew up with his uncle's family following the un-timely death of his mother, had coined him profoundly. Stock took photographs of Dean with pigs, cows and in his former classroom. While strolling around at Fairmount cemetery with his little cousin Markie, Dean posed in front of a gravestone with the telling inscription »LIFE«, smiling in a natural and vivid expression.
